Has anyone had good luck with the newer type gell cell batteries for a coach conversion? Are they better than the tried and true Trojan T-105 or type? Getting close to deciding what I need. Thanks in Advance. Henry of CJ

Henry, I ran across some information that said that either gell cell or absorbed glass mat (one of them) was sensitive to overcharging. I don't recall which one it was.

It might be a good idea to check on this issue.

I understand that the better inverters can be programmed to deal with these types of batteries, but I would think that you would want to be sure that you had one that would monitor the temperature of your batteries.

Kenny Cole over on the Yahoo gmc-busnuts group bought a bunch of batteries that size for around $50 per last fall, so if price interests you, you might check with him or do a search there.

By the way, I didn't realize that you lived in Cave Junction. We were there last month and missed a chance to meet you.

Good luck!

I bought my inverter from an advertiser in Bus Conversions Magazine and what the obviously very knowlegeable rep told me was that absorbed glass mat batteries are sealed, they don't produce any gas and can be in the same compartment with the inverter. It is imperative to have a well ventilated compartment if you use wet cell batteries and they shouldn't share a compartment with equipment that could cause a spark. I asked various friends into solar power and they all said that AGM is definetely the way to go. Don't worry about the brand they are all made by the same few companies and are all good. Go for price per amp hour! Now mind you, I am passing on information that led me to buy the AGM's -- I don't yet have real world experience! But, I do have the setup approved by Trace (Xantrex) for their SW2512MC inverter. Also, gel cell is not AGM. The AGM's were called "non spillable batteries" on the freight invoice and did not have the hazardous surcharge. They are made to withstand the considerable forces of an accident and not leak.
