Well we just got home with our newly purchased '76 4905. It had been sitting for 6-7 years so I was nervous about what might be wrong after being idle for all that time. I was lucky that I was able to do some things to it before bringing it home. (I also remembered Fast Fred's advise to assume that the last owner didn't maintain it 'cause they were going to sell it anyway.) After crawling under it & seeing that the oil filter had the same amount of grease on it as the rest of the engine & chassis, I decided to change the oil & filter! I figured it will sit for a couple of years after getting home & better to have clean oil in it. I also changed the fuel filters 'cause if they didn't change the oil filter, why would they change the fuel filters? Now here's the scary part. When I removed the filters, I noticed that the fuel smelled like old, bad gasoline. Now, we had already driven this bus on a test drive & didn't notice anything odd. I took a sniff of the fuel tank & it smelled the same. Went & got a drum & pumped out 30 gallons of who knows what. This stuff evaporates! Best we can figure is that somebody had to get rid of some bad gas & decided to "Dump it in the old bus, it ain't going anywhere".
Thanks for the tip, Fred. Who knows what might have happened on the way home!

Congratulations! Welcome to the Fold. After having some fuel/tank hassles, I offer this suggestion. Put a double dose of Howe's Diesel Supplement in it, and fill the tank nearly full. I generally shy away from additives of any sort, but Howe's will STOP the algae/fungi problem that you most certainly will have after a long period of storage. BTW, you can't overdose with it. It will also help lubricate your injectors, and stop their premature wear from using the now-current low-sulphur diesel fuel mandated by the EPA. The nearly full tank will stop condendsation build-up. Lastly- never, I repeat NEVER, leave home without multiple spare fuel filters! Cheers...JJ
