my webasto at 3500 is smoking and sputtering, i just installed her and it took a while for her to start up. she will run but she sputters then shuts down....any ideas? btw i got the unit for $257.50 with a bad motor. webastards wanted $650 for a new one.i told them to pound sand. so i called buhler motor who made the motor for webasto.
i was able to get the exact same motor for $64 it has a 1 inch long shaft instead of a 2 incher but it worked out fine.

do you have a sychematic for this unit ? Have you set the electrodes properly using the jig? then clean the eye and ck to be sure the eye is good. Tips are about $20 and the best place to start.....If the brain isn't sure you have ignition it will stop the fuel flow in about 10 secs and go into a cool down/clean out cycle.

Thomas I have one also but it is the small one. NO it does not use high pressure, yes parts are ultra high, that motor has a 3000 hour life I'm told by Webasto. Also my mesh is junk and they want 300 Plus. I think the Air Top units are way over rated/!!!!. Although personell were helpfull. Maybe someday I may try to repair mine.

I think Webastos are nice, but there initial insane price and exorbitant parts prices make them something I'll have to think long and hard about going to them.

For the prices they charge for parts alone they could just give us the units free and suck our blood for the rest of our lives. The phone co/power co do it... I musta had $ once

Several years ago...6-8, perhaps, I purchased a 2010 from Ronthebusnut...less than a grand, AIR....spent some time cleaning, some few bucks on a part or three and the unit works fine, as we speak.

Most of my inquiry for information and parts was thru Vehicle Systems in CO...courtesy David Haynes, who is no longer there (sad...lay off last year) and AIR, an outfit in Washington did a "rebuild" for me of the control box. Some Marine outfit. Fair price and timely done.

This is fine equipment and if well taken care of...they have a maintenance schedule, printed...
it should serve well and last. Also lots of DYI literature...complete!!

From what you paid for the unit, I'd say you did very well, so far. Maintaining, far as I am concerned, is the key!

If I had to do away with mine today, it would have been well worth what I have in in...probably about $1200+-. No regrets.

All in the eyes...thinking...opinion of the beholder, I suppose.

FWIW

Proheat is the "other". The local dealer sells both, but told me that the Proheat outsells the webasto by a ratio of ten to one.

I had looked into Pro-heat, but as I recall, they had "gone out of business" or some such at the time...at any rate, "no longer available". Could be wrong about that, I suppose. Things "change" as one gets older.....:-) :-)

Dave Galey talked about that unit in his book.

On second thought ('scuse me, folks, but I told you so...) I believe it was a Primus...:-) :-( :-)

an air heater not a water/hydronic heater,
mine now is not smoking anymore but it sounds like it is starved for fuel...

Tom, Webasto says use only the fuel filter that has the metal inside not a paper filter. The paper filters can allow minute pieces and they clog the nozzle. If it sounds starving, how close to the fuel supply is the pump? My Air Top pump was close to the supply. Also my line is clear so I can see if air is in the fuel.

i am 5 or6 feet away and the pump is 6 inches above the 24 inch tall tank.i took out the paper filter and will get a metal one tomorrow, i dose run for a few min then stops sometimes the clicks are 1 per second and sometimes they are every 5 or 10 seconds.

The metal filter is inside the plastic housing, it looks like the old GM filter that is on the carb inlet. Have you ever seen one, or look at a fuel oil furnace nozzle, the back end has same type of filter. And yes my fuel pump acted the same, I found a way to reset (get it to pressure) without letting it fire lean and code off, do not remember anymore.
