13 years and no problems...till now; big time. anyone got a surefire solution? We've had many hot days here in the third world, 100 degrees, (southern NM) and can only attribute it to that...it is from one end of the pool to the other! Lots of other algae, but after a month, that is pretty well gone....this is a "DYI" operation..... Thanx...and sorry for the "intrusion". RCB |

Use should be able to take a sample of your pool water to the local pool chemical supply company and have them check for several items. We had the same problem and the cheapest and best route was to totally drain the pool. Acid wash the walls and refill. The was in contrast to several hundred dollars worth of chemicals. |

Chances are the pool has become too 'salty'. Over time, the water evaporates and more(water) is added ( probably by a 'leveler'). This salt build-up causes the water to 'Need' more chemicals to work. Eventually, the chemicals become so ineffective that algae ( black and green) are difficult to get rid of. Drain most of the pool water and refill. You'll be very happy with the results. ( had a few pools in my time for 30 + years and have seen and dealt with most issues -chemical and mechanical ). |

Wonder if draining a bit (fiberglass pool so can't be drained too far) and letting it "winter over" will help? A lot of the stuff is on the top step/wall joint, but a huge section is about 5 feet down at the mid part of the pool. Poured Chlorine to it, used lots of concentrated Algae remover....Stain and scale remover...Metal remover.... found that PH was still very high, so have used a couple of gallons of Muriatic acid to get PH back to normal. Gone thru 80 pounds of DE (yes, in the last month... + several containers, 10 pounds or so , of Conditioner/Stabilizer which seems to have no effect on anything) and even tried the new DE substitute. I have a hunch that is where things started. This has been a nightmare. $$$s for sure! Phil...I think you might be on to something. We have VERY hard water, thus a lot of scale buildup. Lots of iron as well. Curious however since daily (almost) back washing to waste has been necessary otherwise the algae overwhelmed the filter grid within a couple of hours...or less. Man, it was thick stuff!!! I have had to put in a bunch of water during the past month due to LOTS of green algae. Only when I could finally see the clear, light green water did I discover the Black. Interesting to note that Chlorine test shows very little color the NEXT DAY!!...even with 2 1/2 pounds of Stabilizer added the day before. Amazing , to say the least. Somewhat cooler temps seem to have helped; but I do not want to have the black algae problem in the spring...that's for sure!! Ace...I guess I should have expected it from you, but, honestly do not understand the correlation! Wonder if something like that might have anything to do with your "radiator problem? Thanx for your thoughts, anyway. RCB |

I think that chances are you have too much stabilizer. Stabilizer keeps chlorene from breaking down too quickly. Too much makes it ineffective. As chlorene breaks down the stabilizer remains. When you add more chlorene and stabilizer the process repeats. Over time the stabilizer builds up to the point where you have arrived. Draining water will eliminate stabilizer. If you can't drain it all at once, drain half, refill and repeat a couple of times. Shock the pool good to get rid of the algie and then restore the normal chemical balance. Good Luck! |

Hey Chuck; everyone here says when you get algae just change your fuel filters. Don't know how that will help your pool but hey that's what they say. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Dave |

If you can't drain your pool fearing a collapse, how about overfilling the pool? just let it run a few days and the water will be a lot cleaner. (although you might not have a lawn left)...s.. |

As things are this PM...looking much better...clear water...still a bit of green algae that has not "brushed up from the bottom/sides...and still the black...though seems not as prominent as it was. Chlorine and PH read "normal" today (twice...morning and evening) and we have had a bit of rain. Tomorrow will be the test, I suppose. Meantime, thanx for the consideration, RJ... and for those who have posted. Since it is near the "end of the season" and we are headed for the high, cool country on Wednesday, I will most likely shock, put in Stabilizer and hope for the best for 8-10 days. If necessary, I'll "punt"... Thanx, again! RCB |
