Yeah thats pretty cool. The best part is the amazing 300 ft lengths of track they use. I've seen them on trains, they just lay them over a bunch of cars and they flex as the train goes around bends. Also very cool is the was they join the 300 ft lengths. It's called a thermite weld, they butt the ends then put a form over it that has chemicals in it, the ignite the chemicals and the heat in the form welds the ends together. No oxygen to oxidize in the form, and the welds after being ground down and driven over a few dozen times are invisible. from the top.

Thanks for posting. My father was a tie gang foreman and then a section foreman. I even worked on a tie gang for a short time. That was back when ties were still wood even on the main line. Very interesting.

Wow, thanks for that. I really enjoyed watching it. Think of how many men that deleted in such back breaking work. Remember old movies where you see a rail gang driving spikes all hitting on cue to some gospel hymn?

Interesting to think about all those spikes driven by hand. Back in the early 70's I watched a prison labor gang hand lay and drive ties ( I was delivering rail). What a massive amount of work.
