After being sidlined for a few months due to illness, it is good to be back on the road. However, the MC8 has developed a bad habit. The air discharge valve, behind the spare tire compartment, has developed a constant leak. It was suggested that I should take off the bottom cover (the triagle with the three screws, and tighted the nut that is inside. I tried that. There is no resistance on the nut, and the air keeps coming.

We are in the Burlington NC area, in a good safe place, but stuck until I get this fixed, 350 miles away from home. Is there something I can do to clean this out with the limited tools that I have on board? (And with the limited knowledge). When I push against the nut, the air stops. But, when I release it, the air seeps. 30 pounds of pressure is all she will build.

Help, please.

Gene,

Sounds like your air dryer needs to be serviced. Do you know when this service was last performed?

If it's been a while (more than 1 year), there is probably a good amount of gunk preventing the purge valve from functioning properly.

If it's the original dryer, it's a Bendix AD2, which can be serviced without removing it from the bus. Your manual should describe the procedure.

You don't need any special tools to open it up: A wrench (7/16" or 3/8") to remove the retainer screws and a screwdriver to remove the snap ring. It usually helps to push the cover up into the housing a little to take any tension off the snap ring. If you can't move it by hand, a small bottle jack will do it.

Bob

Bob, thanks for the information. I was hoping that I could get her home for some repairs. I used to have the list of people, by area, who could come and help. Do you have that? It is on the site somewhere, I just can't find it.

It has been more than a year since the dryer has been serviced. The previous owner said that he had done it. I have had the bus for 2 years, but it sat parked for much of that time. I know that is hard on them, but I had to deal with the cancer before I could make any trips. Now that that seems to be under control, I still don't have the mobility and such that I used to have. Perhaps I should have waited to make this trip. But we don't have the luxury of looking back and remaking decisions.

If you know where that list of help is, I would be grateful.

thanks

gene

Thanks for all the information and e-mails. I am going to try to contact some local bus nuts tomorrow and see if I can get some help. I just don't 100%. Or, maybe I'm just getting older.

again, thanks

Try the lazy way first:

Before you take the bottom off, if you can get the air pressure up to purge, so the valve opens, spray a lot of your favorite lube up into it to see if it will get it to move and seat freely, to get you home.

And then do a service on it, just get the kit and change out the purge valve for a new one.

happy coaching!

Connect the air in from the compressor to the air out to the bus and bypass the dryer for now, just let the wet tank drain for at least 2 minutes everyday.

Should be a male to male fitting costing a couple of bucks.

If you don't know what line is what, the in from the compressor will have some air comming thru it.

When you find the out to the bus and connect it to the in from the compressor, it will then pump your tanks up.
