I have a 1961 4517 TDH and I want to identify the transmission that has obviously replaced the original unit. The ID numbers are as follows:

A. 10.6.82 GM V-Drive
6085 22947
010181-6375
6772906
VH-9

Any help on identifying this unit would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to find a maintenence manual for the tranny.

thank you,

Grant4517

The VH9 is a 2 speed transmission that most transit buses ran way back when. I drove them for many years but I wouldn't recomend a VH type transmission for a conversion. I don't know how long it would stand up to highway speeds. Top speed in the bus that would use a VH9 would be about 48 MPH. Ours had a rear end ratio of 5.43 to 1. The TDH5303 that I have had for 18 years originally had a VH transmission but I changed it to an 8V71 and a V730 in 1990. The rear end was also changed to a 4.56 to 1 which gave me a top speed of about 75 MPH. Hope this helps you. Bill

I forgot to mention that if you really want to use the VH9 I do have all the books which I could photo-copy for you. Bill

Bill, I right now am keeping the VH9 until a three speed becomes available and I donate this bus conversion to a local scout troop. Until then I would greatly appreciate any materials you could send. Please advise on the cost of mailing and photocopy.

Regards,

Grant

I tried to send you an e-mail but it got returned. I have 2 books on the VH & VS series with about 100 pages each. One is on the maintenance and the other is mainly on overhaul. Let me know if you got my e-mail or not. Bill
