Coming into St Louis last week we had a little fender bender. I had driven from home (austin) almost to St Louis. I let a friend drive the last little bit and he rear-ended an 18 wheeler. I was sitting in the jumpseat and saw it happen. There was no way he could have avoided it. The truck locked up his brakes and moved into our lane while skidding. We were going about 40 MPH, after we locked up the brakes we hit him going about 5-10 MPH.

I replaced the windshields and lights already. A busnut friend from San Antonio is on his way with a new bumper corner.

The good news is nobody was hurt and there was no damage to the truck and very little to the bus. I will post some pics for your viewing pleasure.
This proves you really need to be careful out there and keep your brakes in perfect shape. Had my brakes been weak this could have been much worse.
Be careful out there.

Best,
Justin

This is the ONE thing that scares me about these buses is that there is NO real protection for the drivers or anyone else in the front. We just dont have much of any metal up in front. The dog nosed skoolis are the only ones who do. Yes, be careful out there and keep a LOT of distance between you and anyone in front.

I agree!
I was not driving so it would be hard to say what I would have done. My regular job is driving entertainer coaches and I get accused of hitting the brakes too often, but usually when anyone in any lane begins to slow down I do the same and increase to about the "12 second rule"

A very very close friend was on Gene Watson's bus when his driver got killed several years ago and he says he still has nightmares about wishing he could do something to free the driver that was pinned in. I really thank god that nobody was hurt.

Lets all be super careful out there. I have found 99% of the time it is the other guy we must watch out for.
Best,
Justin

I am astounded that the damage was so little when a 35K lb. bus hits a 40K truck! If that had been a car or light truck it would be on a wrecker. Glad nobody was hurt. My uncle Sammy, a Teamster used to say that busses were like cabover trucks. "The driver gets to the accident at the same time as the bumper".

My greatest fear being injured in a cab over and trapped. Then on top having the worry or spares to repair. Over here in Oz there just isn't that many spares available.
