I know that most all 8v71's and some early 8v92 engines are painted Detroit Diesel "Alpine Green" but some of the later 8v92's are "silver" hence the Silver Series. My question evolves around the fact that while I will soon be changing out my radiator and have pretty good access to my engine to power wash etc., what color is the actual color for the SILVER Series Detroit? When I purchased my coach, the previous owner had painted it Alpine Green but most of it has come off. I know the silver is not just plain silver but more of a flat gray silver but does anyone know the EXACT color?

Thanks...

The gray was usually for the Gray Marine engines, and is about the same color as a GE circuit breaker box. It was also used with many of the industrial engine applications like fork lifts, pumps, generators, etc.

We used the Silver on the engines we rebuilt up in Ohio and it was a nearly perfect match.

By the way, there were silver 53 and 71 series engines too, lol.
And just like there were a number of different "Alpine Green's", there were different shades of the Silver.

I think painting it anything other than the original color or at least close to it would spark too many odd questions when and if it comes up for sale!

Ace, it doesn't make any difference what color you paint it...it will still leak oil.

We were taught in DD All Series school some years ago that you could take a solid block of steel, paint it Alpine green and it would leak oil.

The also reffered to Detroits as 'inefficient hot running Mother Breezers!'

Bob, I know that may hold water on most DD's but I must say after going thru and fixing what I/we could, tje leaks have all but gone.
This is another reason I opted to paint it white just in case a leak decides to appear.
Had I been lucky enough to acquire the 60 series I had my eye on I would have gone with original silver/grey.
