i pulled into a very nice camping resort on grand island ny last night after dark.after paying the nice lady i hopped into the coach,i go around the first narrow bend and hit a boulder on the drivers side teaRING UP 3 BAY DOORS ,so i go on to the next bend and run over another boulder on the turn.
that not being enough i puncture the oil filter. i called coach net and they wont come out as they have no one with 2 cycle 40 wt oil. i found 5 gallons and a filter in my hold and procede to fix it while laying in 5 gallons of oil. i get that fixed. so i turn around and go around the same turn.........you guessed it i hit the f***ing
rock again and hi ended it.....i slept in the road with no power nor heat....in the morning i agan got under the bus with a shovel and dug this 300 lb rock out. also i lost the bottom to my ramco mirror on the road in Montreal and my cb antenna when it hit the tonowanda rail-crossing on 90.

Thomas, sorry to hear about all the problems. What a poorly designed campground that would leave obstacles of that size unlighted, unmarked and didn't even bother to mention them to you. I am no lawyer, but I think there are some liability issues here on the part of the campground. Take some pictures of the rocks and damage if you haven't already left there.
Better luck to you as you return home.

Thomas, a good campground will ride you down to your site in their golf cart or pickup. During this trip you make small talk and look really closely to see if you can get in (and and get out). When we didn't do this we have been placed in sites it was impossible to get into & some we had to come back the wrong way as it was not possible to go "all the way around the loop". Sometimes it's rocks, trees or close bends, sometimes cars. We have gotten in the habit of taking the toad off and doing this if the campground does not offer (Gotta unhook anyway).

Remember that our buses have WAY longer wheelbases than most campers & campground operators just don't think about that stuff.

PS: Now you understand all the dented bay doors you see on buses!

Oh my!! THanks for posting this! I know I have gone to campgrounds and it didnt feel right, just a little too tight for my comfort! Im soo sorry! On one occassion I have asked the campground manager to escort me out of the park because of the very tight fit (and they were very kind to do it as they had to take me out the way most people come in). Im going to be walking the campground from now one (as I dont have toad hookups yet) to make sure I can get in and out. This is bad!

Tom; so sorry for your luck especially with the person in charge. Hope all goes will from here out and you have a safe journey. I would check with better business and see what could be done to let them know what is going on.

Chec the state law for campgrounds, as in Florida the campground MUST provide you with safe ingress and safe egress, so if you get stuck or anything like you are going through, the campground is completely liable,Lots of campgrounds are liable same as a landlord, which they really are, GOOD LUCK

YOU certainly have the right to tell us the name of that pretty rv resort you visited, we may all want to plan our next trip using that fine resort as a stopping place, We all wouldnt want to go to some other place that could ruin our familys rare oppertunity to take a vacation,

Rough fortune happens...though would it not!

Sorry to hear of the turn of events.

Wonder if they have anything posted (or advised you) of length problems, particular places to/not to drive? I'm quite sure there is some liability there, albeit possibly some for both parties.

After "dark", one is most likely not to linger the next day, so we look for a Flying J...or whatever. Well lighted, lotsa' room to maneuver. We learned, early on, to "pick our place" long before sun down....have just acclimated to that way of traveling (thinking) over the years....and one reason we stay out of commercial campgrounds,if possible.

Just our way. :-)

I have a "little" legal experience..... Before you leave get pictures, names of the managers, and find any witnesses. Get their names and numbers and if possible have them sign a paper saying what they saw, have them sign it "under declaration of perjury". Also talk to anyone else in the park in a big rv to see if anyone else had problems getting in or out or just very tight squeezes. And if you post the name of the park, Im sure you may find a few bus nuts in the area who would go check it out and help testify that it is impossible to get in and out without damage and that you were not careless. They need to be held liable for this but you have to prove that you were not careless.

What a hard time you are having. I hate to be the odd guy out here but I feel the need to say something that might be of use to you and others here in the way of avoiding these sort of issues in the future.

Certainly campgrounds should have reasonable access and should have a certain amount of responsibility. But I have to say this. The driver is in charge of knowing his vehicle and all potential obstacles and either stopping, backing out or even choosing another park. The key here is going very slow and using the brakes and then making good decisions. I am really concerned for you that so much damage occurred and repeatedly at that. I really want to suggest that you examine your driving techniques. We take these big beasts in some really awkward places and it is up to the pilot in command to make it work. I only say these things out of concern for you. I am not minimizing the fact that the park is a poorly arranged dump, but we should expect ourselves to make good decisions even in these horrible campgrounds. I do feel bad for you and there is nothing worse than dinging up your rig. Good luck getting it back in order and I wish you the best.

I agree Greg. The only problem is it was at night and this boulder was not lit up. He couldnt see it..... i guess it was out of sight of his headlights or possibly the park had a posted rule not to use headlights at night and only parking lights instead. If he had seen the boulder going in then he would have been able to back out, but not seeing it he rolled over it. Then when he was leaving I guess there was no other way out of the park except to go over the boulder...... just a guess.

Yep we always walk to the spot if not taken in a cart and check things out especially if it is in the dark. You just never know what is waiting you around the next corner.

I agree with RC if it is dark find a wal-mart or Flying J etc and wait until the morning to be sure.

Sorry about your troubles. Are lights adjusted at the right height. FWIW

we have docking lights to see everything on all sides in tight places, and will use them if warranted at 7, 10, or midnight that said I always have the option to do the wrong thing. Its hard to place blame when you were the only one in motion, it's like the tree that jumped in front of me. We all make mistakes and we all take our lumps and learn tough lessons sometimes.Suing a campground for this sounds off to me...man up and take the blame for your own actions

steve i did man up and i never said was going to sue anyone......but these people have an attractive nuisance there that need to be removed. in pitch black with a hairpin turn it's hard to see a boulder. also the sign saying one way was about 10x12, rather small for an old guy to see in the dark .also i am a very good driver and would bet some of you may have trouble in that park.

This is a bummer all the way around.
Yes, the loose nut behind the wheel is responsible for his/ her own actions.
However, there is a certain 'reasonable expectation' for safe passage in certain environments.

While the driver is responsible for the consequences resulting from the assumtions he made. . . .
I believe the campground has an obligation to provide adequate warnings of known hazards. Surely Thomas wasn't the first to have hit that particular obstruction. . . .

Bottom line is we all need to accept responsibility for our shortcomings & help each other out whenever we can. (From what I've read, I think the campground should have done a little more before to help prevent it & been a little more understanding afterwards since they didn't do much on prevention.)

I like the docking lights idea and will use that on my currently (outside anyway) stock coach. On our last vacation up north we went to a campground and pulled in at night. I had two teenage boys with me and they stood behind my bus to help me back in to a spot. They backed me right into the water faucet hookup!! I knocked it over but it was on some sort of a flexible connection at the ground level and bounced right back up without damage! Grrrr!!!

On another occassion my son (one of the above named teenage boys) backed me right into a lamp pole that was right in front of his nose!!! The pole was wood 4x4 and rotted at the base...... it fell over :-( GRRRR again!!!

Surprisingly, neither time was any damage done to my bus, which is the only reason my son is alive today :-)

Teresa, That is too funny, at least reading it anyway. Tell your boys to get glasses!

We have not had the experiences that Thomas has had, but close. I was visiting my in-laws a couple of years ago at their ranch. As we were leaving I felt I could not go around the circle driveway as their trees appeared to be too low. So I backed up, with my wife watching, into a gated area, put in first to pull out and the rear end swung so much it hit the gate post and it was steel. It changed the appearance of the air intake on the side or our Eagle, almost flattened it. I was able to fix it but I was still upset, mostly to myself. It did leave some white paint on the rear corner bumper, which I was able to remove. I told my wife..........well never mind!

Sort of like when
Larry decided to back TempBus into the shop without waiting for me to come out and spot for him? In his defense, yes, 95.8% of the time he comes into the office, I AM on the phone, but OTOH, he KNOWS you have to use a shoehorn to get both buses into that shop...thank goodness it was the door corner trim & NOT the other bus he heard scratching & scraping along! My TT tripps GFCI outlets because some electrical wizzard thought it a good idea to bond the grounds & neutrals inside the camper. My short term 'fix' is to not use GFCI outlets. :-)

If a GFCI is the only option, I use a 'fire hazard' adapter that has the ground pin removed. When plugged in as such, I am fully aware that the camper is not grounded at the pedestal. My only ground is the tongue jack on a metal base. Not ideal, but sometimes thats how it is.

This RV parks solution to a problem of having something run over in there corners is typical of small minded thinkers, aka Morons.

Without seeing it, but using Thomas's description, its clear they need to move the obstruction and possibly widen the pavement on the corner, but it seems they have forgotten who and why they are there, to serve there customer.

Making it an easy park to negotiate in a large vehicle should be one of there goals. Maybe have the customer want to return...Ya think!

But we all should accept that we have the ultimate responsibility for our vehicles as drivers.

Before backing in to a campsite, I always walk the site and place a traffic cone right where I want the left rear corner of the coach to be.

Always back in from the left if at all possible, even if it means going the wrong way on the road.

Even when I don't have help backing in, it makes it a lot easier.

My usual practice is to unhook the toad at the office and drive it to the site, scoping out the road, then going back to get the coach.

Never let anyone rush you through the process.

It's odd that other Motor homes and RV's had made it through with no problem for awhile before you had a problem.
Could it be, and I'm not trying to hurt your feelings here, but you just may not have enough experience at driving a vehicle with a long wheel base and long overhang?
Back when I started driving, my teacher, (Stepdad), told me... Rule number one: THE DRIVER IS RESPONSIBLE!
As someone noted earlier, if you look at a lot of buses, the rear bay doors are mashed up on the passenger side. That's from turning tighter than the obstruction and the wheelbase allow. Usually from lack of experience, sometimes from lack of paying attention, sometimes from an emergency move to avoid another obstacle.

My advice would be to look to yourself for problems before blaming others for a fault.

Thomas,
Don't feel bad buddy. One drizzly, foggy night I found a large empty supermarket lot to turn around in. I saw the lightpole in my mirror, but did not see the 6' concrete base. Needless to say I hit the bay door for the bus air condenser coil/blower and killed both the condenser and the bay door on a year old million+ Prevost.

Lucky no one was hurt. The insurance picked it up. Hemphill was not amused to say the least.

I have driven hundreds of thousand miles in these things and all it takes is one second of not paying attention.

Sorry to hear about your damage. If there is anything I can do to help you, let me know.

Best,
Justin

even the ...... umph..... eh..... "professionals" do it. The rear door on my RTS was damaged when I bought it (just like Dallas said) and Ive tried to replace it with another door but so far everyone's RTS door seems to be damaged in the same place! Additionally, when I had my 27' motorhome I took it to a mechanic once and THEY damaged it in a corner when backing in..... but that was on the driver's side!

One thought for the cruising folks that may not be greeted with open arms at a campground is to SHUT DOWN on arrival, while going to the office.

Sometimes the reluctance is from a past idiot that left in the AM after a 45 min "warm up".

Also get a RVIA ID from a scrapped unit and install it.

Why the worst code in the world for a vehicle counts for anything is a constant mystery , but having it visible may help.

Our Sportscar airs up in under 2 min , so in the early AM , we start AFTER all the goodies (power hose ect)are aboard , and slowly depart as soon as the air hits 110psi.

Hey Fast Fred I thought I was the only guy who did that.

I thought the badge look good and I plan to mount it right beside the original GM plate.

What is the significance of those plates??

For the owner of the camper nothing.

For the shlock builders that create the usual sticks and staples its a place to hide from law suits , if it burns too the ground.

$6.236.00 worth of damage to the coach, but i got all the panels from Luke and ibp industries and even added another large bay door bottom that was in bad shape to the mix. i bought a rivet remover and 200 rivets with mushroom tops and will install them myself. i then will have a body guy straighten the one door frame that was a little twisted and pull out the dent in the floorboard. i also need one muffler for the geni and one mudflap.with the $$ slated for painting i will have her soda blasted and polished down in leminster mass.
