O.K. anybody out there a machinest...I just had a guy give me a almost new machine that cuts keyways in shafts.he said it cost 4000 new & has only been used twice.it's got all kinds of important looking parts & a booklet & case,I saw in the book somebody was cutting a 1/2 inch keyway in about a 4" shaft..(serious stuff)
do any of you know more than I do about it& what would it sell for..it's kinda non bus related, but I don't know who to ask

Sounds like a milling machine. It could be either a vertical or horizontal miller, but more information would be needed. Would need to know what brand it is and exactly how old in order to give a fair value to it. HP of the motor, single phase or three phase. The size of the working table. Also all the stuff that goes with it would be nice to know more about what it is in order to access a value to it. The best thing to do would be to have pictures you could email.

FWIW,
Rich

It also might be a broaching machine, if it's set up to specifcally cut keyways and not much else. But if it can't cut a key in the inside of a pulley bore, it's probably a vertical mill as Rich says.
Send us a photo and it'll be an instant call....

It's a keyway cutter, and yes it probably was several thousand when new. The problem you'll have in trying to sell it is that it is a rather specialized machine, and it's for stuff that is a bit larger than what the home machinist would use. The specs for the one shown on the website is that the minimum shaft diameter it can work with is something like 1.5 inches.

You might try finding a commercial machine shop in your area and see if they might be interested in it. Someone who makes cranes for industry, or other large equipment.

Tow Dogs, this sounds like what a boatyard would use to make a new shaft for a boat. Those are usually inch and a half or larger and most are tapered.

Good luck!

I might take it with me when I go to the rio grade valley next winter, lots of boats down there, was hopeing to trade it for a couple of steer tires before that..it's a nice looking machine & will cut keyways in a shaft from 7/8" to 10 1/2 in diameter..very little use, although the instruction manual has been handeled with greasy hands..
