The radiator is in and secured! The engine is painted, the new hoses are cut and installed and some clamps are on and tight. Found that a couple of my clamps were pretty rusted and won't loosen let alone tighten so I will be replacing those! While painting the copper water pipes to match the engine, the damn love bugs swarmed and got the large one going to the upper radiator connection so I had to strip it down and re-paint it. That is what I am waiting on now (paint drying) so I can install it and then I think I will be ready to fill it back up with new anti freeze. Man have you ever sat there and watch paint dry? Very boring!  If all goes as planned, and the weather holds out like it has, I should be ready to roll again by the weekend! I know I took a lot longer than normal but I did save 500-750.00 big ones! That's a tank of fuel! | ||

White believe that or not! My friend who just did a 60 series upgrade painted his white and it kind of grew on me so I went home and after a couple days pondering over it, It was decided to, just do it! I figured it can always be done pink or purple the next go around! Here you can see the two motors, his big 14 litre and my little 8v92   | ||

John thanks and although it sounded easy and for the most part it was, some of the bolts that hold the fan shroud in place and TWO very stubborn bolts that brace the radiator at the top were VERY hard to get started. The shroud bolts were easy to screw in but very hard to reach unless of course your part contortionist, and the two bolts at the top really did claim some skin from both Susan and I due to not having but about 2 inches of room to work, if that! Both if us have matching scars/scabs on the back of our right hand where we both were struggling to get ONE of the two bolts in! Finally after some thought we figured out an easier way! Also pictures of both show freshly painted and clean motors but both have their "issues" where the pics don't show everything! His was painted OUT of the coach and mine was IN the coach which was a LOT harder. His went thru the hell of installation where mine, well, was just plain hard to reach without painting something you really didn't want painted! Much-O touch up has been done and still to do! Maybe I can talk Susan into letting me post pictures of our hands! | ||

EVERYTHING is complete as far as I'm concerned except adding new coolant! Trying to figure out how to get ALL the rebate I can when it says you can get back $7.00 per gallon for TWO gallons ONLY per household. That's a HUGE savings when your buying 15 gallons! Retail is $10.50 minus the 7.00, means $3.50 per gallon totaling $52.50 after it's all said and done rather than $157.50 without rebate! | ||

Where do you guys get the rebates for a DD approved antifreeze the only rebates I saw at Auto Zone was on the`automotive type Prestone ? | ||

Going on what I was told, the Prestone, Zerex and other name brands at local auto supply houses was ok to use in the older 2 strokes and the newer 4 strokes needed to have the newer formulation found at DD or your big rig shops like Peterbilt, Frieghtliner, etc. I know my dad always just used regular anti-freeze in his 8v71 back in the day and I never used anything special since owning a bus and all if them had 2 strokes. Never had a 4 stroke so can't say. | ||

Do some checking Ace I think you find out your 8v92 needs the same antifreeze as a 60 series 4 stroke.I ran the green in my 8v92 when it was sold at DD which they don't sell any longer never bought it from a auto parts store,the 8v92 and 8v71 are 2 different animals the antifreeze debate just keeps going but me I followed the DD bible good luck | ||

Well, I found this information and it didn't come from DD web site. I found many other sites from name brand makers like Zerex, Prestone, etc that say basically the same thing. They ALL have different formulas for different applications but the ones they all recommend for GM DD's are all ethylene glycol based. Don't know why they all say this but they do. Any ethylene glycol base antifreeze IS recommended for use in all Detroit Diesel engines. Methyl alcohol base anitfreeze is NOT recommended because of its effectthe non-metallic components of the cooling system and because of its low boiling point. Methoxy propanol base antifreeze is NOT recommended for use in Detroit engines due to the presence of fluoroelastomer seals the cooling system. | ||

The biggest thing is to check the (acid) level in 4 strokes, needs checked at least once a year. Working big trucks need checked every PM. Some wet liner engines (Cat v8& old Cummins) the liners are lockcoated, to slow down eating holes in the liners. I do not know abuot todays new engines. I worked in a factory where we had a foundry to finish, we made liners both wet an dry, gas, desel an refers. Cummins an Cat v-8 had a big problem with holes in liners now lockote helped a lot, we made OEM and replacement liners. | ||

Put 10 gallon of anti-freeze in along with 5 gallon of distilled water. Actually put in 2.5 gallon and then 2 gallon of water, then 2.5 gallon and then 2 gallon of water until it was full. I ran it tonight checking for leaks but it only got up to 176 degrees and then dark and hungry so I will run it again tomorrow when it hopefully gets hotter outside. There were NO leaks and so far that is a good thing! | ||

Ace, you really can't expect that big engine to come up to operating temperature unless you take her on the road and give her some work to do...but you know that. Sounds like you've spent a lot of time bringing all your maintenance up to date and so we're looking forward to seeing you and Susan (and Bo) at Arcadia this year again. I like the idea of the white engine, we always did that on the boats, because in there's an ounce of an oil leak you can jump on it like a dog on a coon. Would that I had your youth and ambition. Yea Bob, other than slappin some card board over the grill to help rise the temps, it needs to be out on the road and I will do that soon enough when I leave for Hoboken. I was hoping to run up and top off the tank but waiting for the last pennies to fall before I do so. Right now, it's at 2.99 local and 3.23 a little further north! My painting is not perfect but it's a lot better than it was! ;) | ||

Ace, Our last fill up in VA was $2.73. That will get us to Stateboro, GA. Most the stations in SC have been in the $2.80s. I have not checked GA prices yet. Jack | ||
