I have been looking at macerator toilets (marine style) for our coach.
My idea is to have the black water well liquified before it goes into the tank, then to discharge it thru another pump when we dump.
I am thinking that this will allow me to use a substantially smaller hose to dump as well will make it easy to dump from both sides of the coach.
Anyone with pros or cons?

If we'd all go on liquid diets the need for a macerator would be nil.
That's my thought & I ain't sticking to it!

OR you could just buy & install a stand alone macerator....

I have been using a macerator pump for 7 years and don't know why you'd dump your tanks any other way. I have never used my 3" hose. It's still in the storage tube new.

I don't know about a marine toilet. I don't see the need to macerate it twice. Or if there would be problems settling and be hard to totally empty the tanks.

Dallace.
I love ingenuity but using a garberator wasn't what I had in mind but I bet it works.
Jerry
I want to use the macerator toilet so that the waste is liquid before it goes into the tank and also so that I don't have to depend on gravity to get the black water to the tank.
What type of macerator do you use to dump your tank?
Please don't tell me it was made by kitchenade lol

Les, I used a Jabsco macerator for awhile... until I ran it dry, twice.
The rubber impeller costs around $50 and is a crappy job to replace.
I like the idea of the garbage disposal, it's higher horsepower, has a stainless impeller, doesn't mind being run dry, will work on shore power or inverter, and can be replaced at any hardware store for under $100.

I knew a fellow back in the 70's who used a couple of S&S Winnies for working the short track circuit in the south. He had both of them set up with macerator pumps that were plumbed right into the collector of the headers he had on the motors. He could empty his tanks in about 10 min and said he'd never had a problem with tailgaters.

Works great but fotgetaboutit with RV junk.

A Obendorfer unit is about $800 , but will work for 30 years.

Galley Maid also has good units .

120V is the best as the 12V ones go beserk if there is too thick a solution. The Galley Maid has a point to add water while pumping , the Obendorfer doesn't need the help.

This is not really a new or unique idea, the garbagator.

I remember at least two different discussions on the subject on two different boards some time ago.

As I remember it they each came to the same conclusion, that being that while they worked for short runs, they were neither cheaper to build and were not suitable for pumping long distance nor up hill.

A real macerator pump can be had for around a hundred bucks on ebay, I carry two!

Dallas & Ace I am Jazzed also, and looks pretty easy, placement of the bolts is pretty critical.

I looked at that too and have always wondered if you could make one out of a disposal and now I know. Thanks Dallas. I will make one soon out of the new one I bough for a back up for the house when they were on sale but never had to put it in,Now that we will be leaving to full time I know where I will need it. Ace, I think I would forgo the trout tube and hang the pump as close to the out tube as I could.
Other than that, I have no advice, except to please let us know how it goes.
I'm looking for a new or used disposal naow to see if I can build a workable model.

I found some info once about the install. Hook up to the lines coming from the ivory tower and the sink to the top on the unit and then you can run flex piping, like heater hose, to the side outlet and let er go right in the tank.

Just to let everyone know that we bit the bullet and ordered our macerator toilet. Got a great deal from a company that is clearing out some discontinued Dometic units. Regular retail was over $1500. We bought it for $549.
I feel like we are really making some progress on the coach
thanks again to everyone who gave input on this topic

Ace;
How would it be to use an elbow bayonet fitting directly off your 3" to the top of the Opening on the Disposal and use no hose length. Some kind of pull out bracket to support the weight or ?

I know the unit will macerate, but will it pump or do you have to rely on gravity or add a pump to the project? Sounds like an interesting project. Jack

Jack:
If the guy in the article raised it 7 feet in the air and had good flow it should work? There is an impeller inside also that will push water through. If let to run dry there could be a back up but flush with water at the end should take care of that.I am sure we shall find out soon, from Ace, eh?

If it hits the Fan wrong, LOL

You could add a water hose connection to the dishwasher inlet for a final flush.

I have been using a rariton macerator toilet for years and like it. I originally bought it because the toilet only needs a 2 inch benable hose for discharge which makes location more flexible because it doesn't have to be over the tank. Also it has a loop seal on the discharge so no opening exposed to the tank therfore no smell.

That is exactly why I went with the macerator toilet. Thanks for confirming what I believe.
In the time you have had yours have you had to do any repair on it?
From the discharge hose on the toilet what material did you use to go to the black water tank?

Raritan makes quality marine products and i believe are still located in NJ. As far as garbage disposal units, Insinkerator makes the best in our humble opinion. I also think as long is there is plenty to pump, the disposal will pump it 7 foot head (?) i would set up the rinse option!

If you are going to use a disposal unit and the rinse option, be sure to install a back flow preventer at that connection.

"don't know why you'd dump your tanks any other way. I have never used my 3" hose. It's still in the storage tube new. "

Guess if everyone took 20 minutes to pump out their tanks instead of 20 seconds with a 3" hose, we would need double the number of dump points to cope in busy times.

I have seen people take much more than 20 minutes to clean up after the 3 inch hose fails or the bayonet breaks and they have a flood of very nasty solids all over the dump site.
Just has to be a better, cleaner, more convenient way to deal with a nasty part of the lifestyle

I'd prefer to modify the ends of the garden hose/ disposer outlets to a different type of connection, so it could never be accidentally used for something else. Otherwise, it looks like a great idea.

I installed in 1997, live full time and have never had a problem. I used a 2 inch hose from discharge to tank , total length about 3 feet. Hose was bought at West Marine and looks like a high quality plastic hose with ribs in it.

I have found both a Jabsco macerator and a shurflo unit as well as a flojet.
I have used both Jabsco and shurflo pumps for years and have had very good success with both. I won't use the flojet because of the set up. both the pumps I am considering have the same 11/2 inch suction side and 1 inch discharge.
Our macerator toilet has arrived in Edmonton but I haven't picked it up yet.
Thanks Prather
happy bussing

I have a 12v portable macerator pump that hooks onto the 3" dump and will work fine through a 5/8" garden hose, although slow. Maybe a half hour to empty 100 gal.

It calls for a 3/4 or 1" hose but try to find a 50' length one of those I can carry or afford.
