Folks, I am looking at purchasing an old silverside (it is beautiful) with the original 4 speed column tranny and a straight 6 Detroit 671. I have two questions, that I was hoping someone would be kind enough to answer for me. 1. Can I turbocharge this moter, and if so, is it hard to do? 2. The tranny does not work in reverse. The owner tells me that it was just fine, but they took it into a mechanic for a tune up, and the mechanic cut several electrical wires, and now there is no reverse. Could this be?? Thanks! |

1. You can install a turbo charged engine but it should take another block assembly. Turboed engines have different pistons, the Aftercooled engines have different blocks. You'd benefit from a 4V head. There are other problems that would have to be solved, probably bigger radiator, bigger intake, turbo use required a different exhaust manifold, you'd have to construct an intake system to plumb the turbo. Geoff will have the better information. This is just a preview. BTW, it'll be a rocket ship, from what Kadletz says. Onward and Upward Marc Bourget |

Thanks, Marc, for the info! I am looking at a 47 Silverside that was converted in the middle 80's, and it is beautiful, and I think I am in love! The moter is a very new rebuild, but it seems to be pretty underpowered and, of course, I am looking for more power..... I appreciate your response. Monte |

How much did the PD3751-4151 weigh? A buddy of mine had a 4151 while back and they seemed to be pretty substantial coaches. |

Find the reverse solenoid and check the wiring. you can have someone manually put it into reverse as the driver shifts into second |

The revesre problem is a cut wire or on my 4104 (same set up as silversides ) the conection on the back of the reverse soleniod tends to be loosen or corroded and needs to be cleaned. This is located on the top of the transmission. As far as power goes my 4104 is underpowered for the mountains, but so are the 40 ft coaches with 871,s or 692,s. But On my trip home from the Louisville Bus Bash, I was following a grehound MCI.12 through the Kentucky hills for about 60 miles. He would pass me on the hills but I would catch him on the flate. I realize that the greyhounds now are governed to 72 mph but thats still not bad a 671 up against a series 60.( is it a 50 or a 60 they are now running in the 12? ) John |

As far as I know Greyhound is running 50's in thier 102DLs... The charter companies are running series 60's. As far as I know, I might be wrong. |

After 2 1/2 years of dedicated restoration/conversion, I feel I am qualified to discuss this subject. I have GM 3751 #030. It is a West Coast Cruiser. (three gear ratio combos...East Coast, Midwest and West - West is the lowest...72 mph on the governor (2200rpm) with the 4 valve I had "Diesel Exchange" in Springfield, MO remanufacture from the original 2 valve to the latest version of 4 valve (245 HP on the dyno). We discussed turbo-charging but I opted out due to the increased heat, the added components and the limited gearbox. I'm happy I did. I pass trucks on the big hills east of the Mississippi (one downshift Cincinnati to Florida Jellico hill). If I decide to roam all over the US and Canada I may re-energize and work with "Diesel Exchange" THE BEST diesel engine business around!!! and look at maybe restructuring to accomodate a 6V92 and Allison. Good Luck and believe me... the Silversides is much appreciated by the discriminating public. Write if you want pics and more info. Rdub...bluemarblefarm@mindspring.com |
