How do you hook up to the Jake Brake on an Eagle with 8v92 and 740 Allison? We have one wire on each head sticking out we tried 12 volts to each wire it kicked the jake on.Our problem is what do you hook to them to control the jake and also do you wire it with an option to kick one or both.thanks for any help Booker |

off= off second position=one head connected third position = both heads connected to 12 volt ....and.... throttle position switch in series so brake is only applied at idle fuel...this would generally be a normally closed switch. This setup still does not solve the problem of needing to shut the master switch off when comming to a complete stop. |

Go to jakebrake.com and you can contact them for instructions. |

You need a micro-switch on the governor buffer screw, and a Jake three position switch on the dash. |

Don't forget the freewheeling diodes (arc supression diodes) on the buffer switch. On the older switches there was only one. It must be connected on the coil side, else your expensive switch is toast in a few weeks. The newer switches have diodes on both sides, so you can't mess up. If you have a High idle cylinder, you need a different setup that mounts on the cylinder etc. Best to find one second hand, cylinder and all. New $$$ about 250. If you are running an automatic, the hot supply to the front selection switch must be qualified by the tranny torque converter lockup as well as the closed throttle. Can't Jake Brake if the tranny is not locked up. FWIW> Jim Stacy |

Where on the 740 is the torque converter lockup switch? I have Jakes too but were not hooked up but seems like all of the swwitches, etc are there. Jim-Bob |

I called Allison trans shop where I got our trans they said to look at the bottom of converter housing there are four 1/4 in. plugs. One is on a boss block that sticks out about an inch the other three are to the right of the extended plug it is the one furthest. Called our local Detroit dealer still trying to get switches to make jake work |

My jake is not hooked up to the auto transmission. Once the torque converter drops out, I lose jakes. Simple as that. Richard |

On a mechanical Allison transmission the torque converter locks up internally (lockup clutch), I don't know how you are going to put a pressure switch anywhere. If it has electronic controls, perhaps there is a spot to connect to the ECU and electric lockup solenoid. But, Richard has it right-- if you are going so slow that your torque converter drops out, you have no jakes or need for them. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Richard & Goeff, At what speed does the lockup converter unlock? Isn't there a hydraulic clutch that locks the converter? If so, there must be a port to check the clutch application pressure? Jim-Bob |

Mine drops out between 10-15 MPH, regardless of what gear the tranny is in (I believe). Only a problem on the most steep, narrow, winding roads where it is difficult or impossible to maintain 15 MPH. BTW, these roads are generally posted not recommended for trucks or busses, but the signs always appear after you get started down, and there is no place to turn around. LOL Richard |

As Booker states, there is a port on the trans which senses pressure when the convertor is locked. You can get the switch from your Detroit dealer or many parts stores. You must series wire your jakes through this switch to drop out the jakes. Even though the jakes won't be slowing you down without the convertor in lock, you will still have them applied until you switch them off manually.Hal |

Hal, need some help in understanding what you are saying. In my Eagle, I leave the Jake switch on while decending a grade. When the torque converter drops our I lose any braking action created by the engine compression/Jake. As soon as the road speed increases enough to permit the converter to lock up, I immediately have Jakes. How/or is this any different than your last sentence. Richard |
