We are getting ready to plan for our holding tanks in our MC-9. We don't do much if any boondocking, so we don't need very large tanks. Probably like 50 gallons fresh, and 30 or 40 gallons each on the black and grey. Just big enough to get us from place to place. What I am trying to figure out is, the best and easiest for the bay configuration that we need is to place the tanks side by side by side in the 3rd bay, drivers side. The other half of the same bay will have some heavy sound equipment (speakers, etc.) Probably a total of about 400 pounds worth of sound equipment.
What I want to know is is this too much weight in one bay? Will the weight be distributed even enough with tanks on one side, equipment on the other?
Thanks.

Fifty gallons at eight pounds per gallon is equal to your sound equipment. . .

Piece of cake for your MCI. . .

I used plastic 55 gallon barrels ,on their side 2'' to 3" adaptor in the bung, cut a 3 1/2 ' hole in the side, for the toilet to dump into,....for fresh water, 55barrel ,one bung has a 3/4"
knockout plug ,hose bib in there & fill with garden hose on the top bung...barrels were 5.00 each & really top quality plastic, approx 3/8 thick.really turned out neat, total cost 50.00 with all fittings, not bad for fresh water and blackwater, course ,there are some people that have lots of money spend a couple of thousand on it..will be glad to send you a drawing by snail mail...dosdogs1@juno.com

This is not a critisism, I to like to save where I can, but for the fresh water tank, if you paid $5 for the tank i would think it is used. If so do you know what it was used for? I'd hate to see someone at a campsite glowing in the dark.

Most of these plastic barrels are juice barrels. Your water may taste like an apple or grape for a while. Certainly not harmful. Many will come with labels still on them so you can tell it wasn't used for poisionous stuff.

YEP.....

labels on barrels tell what was in them, blackwater, doesn't matter, freshwater,I got that one free, from a guy that bought it for water when we had that y-2 scare...they were for sale at SAMS or WAL-MART...it turned out a beautiful system..I'm very proud of it,I don't have money, but, I was blessed with the "craftmansip" gene...like Carrol...I only go short times not hooked up,if you need more than 55 gallons, you are full of---- :)

I know how you feel , on one of my projects I used 1 inch (ID) "hollow rod", somthing I have never heard of .

Always worried it came from a Nuke plant , & I would glow in the dark from bending it.

Barrels dot stack well , so you might get loads more volume from plain rectangular tanks.

how many "square" tanks do you see ,got to go back to high school engineering,a square tank will try to turn into a round tank...or bust the seams..stop being so negative

Because of difficult economic restraints (NO $MONEY$) I also have been looking very hard at the 55 gallon plastic barrels.

Have a source locally that can provide them in the white translucent plastic complete even with a gallon gage cast into the plastic.

Yeah, usually the contents is located on the barrel. Right now they have a little bit of grape juice in the bottoms.

If they had food stuff stuff inside them, then probably the plastic used to make the barrel is of food quality which means that they....

....were hopefully made with virgin resins and stuff containing no bad or deadly chemicals that could cause health problems.

Barrels used for industrial chemicals may have been made of recycled resins and plastics that probably have very bad levels of bad chemicals.

Thus the proper concerns of having you or your neighbor literally glow in the dark. Mom, I need some Gas Ex right now please.

Do NOT recommend barrels that had acid or industrial chemicals or that come from your local friendly plywood plants. Yuck!

Only $20 bucks each, which while $high$ compared elsewhere, they fit my budget just fine. Will probably use the area around the rounds....

....of the barrels for additional storage space. Room for all sorts of extra little dohickies or junk which will accumulate. Good luck.

Giving up space for low cost is a vaid swop ,
but use a couple of the dollars saved to get a Dupree dump valve.

Any dollars "saved" with a cheapo RV dump valve, will eventually be traded for lots of extra stinkey work.

There are a few places where First Class pays in the long run.

And NOT having to fix the dump valve is certainly one!

Karl;
I found the barrels at our local farm and feed store in town. One might also try your local Grange or farm supply outlet.

If you are too urban for farm stores, maybe try your local friendly building supply outfit. It is all a matter of hooking up with the right supplier.

I have found the more barrels your want or need, the better the price becomes. May use a total of 6 in the Crown ex-schoolie plans. Good luck.

I found plastic 55-60 gal drums at the local drive thru carwash. Won't work for fresh water because they held car wash soap, but the manager was glad to get rid of them, so they were free.
