I had a transmission line go on me last week. Got a new one installed with no trouble. Now I am having troube getting the oil level right. The dip stick has a cold level mark on it and a hot level mark on it also. When I fill the tranny up to the cold level mark ( engine and tranny is cold) and then start and warm up the tranny, then read the dip stick the oil level is way up past the hot level mark by about 6 inches.
My questiuon is should I fill the tranny to the hot level mark when the engine is hot and running or use the cold level mark when the tranny is cold? I know you are supposed to check the level when the tranny is hot, but the cold level mark has me wandering.

Checking the level in mine is a real PITA

I think I remember being told there is a plug on the side of mine at the pan that can be removed and the correct level will be right to that point similar to checking a rear end.

Never checked it out anyone verify this procedure?

When you check it while it is warm is the engine still running or do you have it shut off? I think that it is supposed to still be running when you check it.

Ed I believe it should be running but I have difficulty getinng any accurate readings either way.

I know the fellow who told me of the plug on the side of the trans and he usually has had correct info in the past.

Roger
Go for a trip long enough to get the tranny hot and leave it running. Check the level then while the engine is idling below 700 rpm. The level should fall within the hot range on the stick.

I just spoke with a local shop and he said he was unaware of a level plug but they do have a pan with a sight glass did not have the courage to ask how much that costs

Trans gets checked while idling

The 800# has answering service on weekends left my name and # will see what they have to say.

Suppose I could contact a prevo regional service manager to see what knowledge or help he might add

Bill we understand how its suppose to work but I believe the problem is due to the brass tip on the end of the dipstick it is a terrible contrast to the fluid and is almost impossible to read especially with new fluid.

Very frustrating

If the dip stick is correct there should be 1-1/2 inches between the cold run band and the hot run band if not you adjust the cold run band to the size of oil pan on the transmission section 3.1 in the Allison manual tells how to do that.

good luck

The calibration of the dip-stick is not the problem it is the lack of contrast between it and the fluid, along with the excessive length of the stick

Joe
I see the problem you are having with being unable to read the stick due to lack of contrast with new fluid. I had the same problem with my tractor. I used a hand grinder and put a few nicks at the different levels and the fluid seem to show better in the grind marks making it possible to see where it is. Hope this might help you.

Joe, I had the same problem on an old torqueflight 727. I did like Bill and roughed up the blade then used some high temp engine primer to fill the scratches.

You can also drill a series of small holes in the dipstick.
