My air horns on top of my bus do not work. When I push onthe horn button I xcan hear a clicking sound comming form the relay. When using a screwdriver to make contact with the terminals on the relay, nothing happens. Any suggestions? Thanks for the info, Roger

The horns get gunked , take a spare batt and hot wire the horn to see if it is dead.

There is a air solenoid or skinner valve as some call it that opens from the relay I have no idea were it will be so located on your bus just trace the 1/4 inch air lines, they cost around 30 bucks from Hadley

good luck

You need to see how far you have air pressure when the relay clicks. See if you have air pressure at the horn when horn button is activated. If not work your way back. When you find the spot where you have air pressure, you found your problem. Or, start at the other end and see where you no longer have air pressure. Jack

It's not likely to be the horn button circuit. Typically, the horn button applies a ground to the relay so the worse thing that can happen with a short is that the horn blows steadily.

If you have true air horns, sometimes they stick from lack of use. I have ran air through dual horns for 10 minutes before they start to make sound.
Air valves to energize air horns are very cheap at Peterbilt or Kenworth, I see no big reason to go to the difficulty of adding electricity over air to operate an air horn.

We have 2 pair of air horns as well as a pair of electric horns in the compartment under the driver's seat. We have a SPDT(momentary) toggle switch on the panel to the left of the driver's seat for the air horns. Down activates the lower toned pair, up activates the higher toned pair. A SPST(momentary) switch operates the electric horns. The horn switches in the steering wheel are labeled EMERGENCY ONLY and operate all 6 horns. If that is not enough, I can also pull the ball valve lever to activate the 4 note train whistle. Jack

Horns:
There are 3 types of people...
those who have no use for them
those who blow them
AND
those who react to them being blown.(half the reason we use'em right?)

I assume we ALL here are "Blowers" because we CAN be
(we own one!)
There are sub-sets of owners,
some just use the one that came with their bus
and
those who see them as more than just a way to drain air from the system.

IF you are of the latter type perhaps you'll find this creative use for
REALLY BIG air-horns a pleasant & soothing surprise.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiTDgv4io4I

BUT
if you are the type who is full of mirth when you unload the tank
then THIS one is just made for you!

(Leslie-the finest in Locomotive horns)

OR
maybe you are just one of those that HAS to HAVE one...NOW!!

In that case
you can proceed directly to this link for a dose of reality!

http://www.trucktrainhorns.com/trainhorns/Leslie-Tyfon-A-200-Train-Horn.html

Considering that this is a Monday...
with these 3 links feel free to blow your head off!!
and after you've done so,
report back here describing the impressions you were left with.
(if there were any more puns or entendre's in this post,
I'd blow my head off)

"Looks better than a chain hanging from the ceiling"
(Luvrbus...this line is just too irresistibly rich in potential
...pardon me while I help myself to 2 scoops)

-You should have dumped that skinny dog-leash
for a piece of MAN sized 5/8th's nickel plated yanker.

- Nonsense, just hang a cowbell from it!

-Why? Was it causing a headache problem?
I hear those "Prevo types" use a Purple Velvet "Pull" instead!
(bring it on...Prevo's!)

- You could have used a longer chain, screwed it to the floor and then you'd have a unique Knee actuated one & maybe started a trend!

....frankly Luvrbus. I'm on your side,
if there's a chain hang down near me in the drivers seat,
when I pull it I want a 6ft. Air-Ram with a boxing glove attached to the end to extend out from under the front bumper!
Until then, the button on the floor works just fine fo'me.

Well Jack,

After 43 years with the Southern Pacific, I'm partial to the Nathans.

I also like the sound of the 5-chimes better than the 3s. We had a few of the 1950 EMD E-7 locomotives that had the Typhons, and they lasted into the late 60s.

It took a lot of work, but 35 years ago, I put a set of Nathan P-5s in my '66 Charger. They're right behind the headlights, pointing down, the longest 2 on the right, the shorter 3 on the left. An air tank under the right rear fender, and an electric compressor in the trunk. A double throw switch to give a choice of stock electric when the cops are around, or something that will flat move slowpokes out of the way. Its also a lot of fun to blow it when stopped behind an idiot who is stopped on the tracks at a red light!

My 13 months on the extra board for the Milwaukee Road left me partial to working the Hump in the yard where I could catch a bit of sleep or working indoors in the Minnesota winters . Sure did enjoy hopping a freight to Chicago or Duluth on weekends tho!!

Jack,

Small world, the first four winters, I worked a job called a "Car Retarder Operator" on the hump in LA. Three of us in towers controlling the speed of cars rolling off the hump, and switching them into one of 40 tracks in the bowl yard.

As if Car Retarder Operator isn't bad enough, they corrupted the initials into CROW.
