Hi! Ten year dream & New owner of 72 MCI-7 8v71. 4 forward, 1 reverse. Tag axle. A friend looked it over & told me it makes a "bang" sound when shifting gears. Previous owner says it is normal for MCI to make bang or popping sounds when shifting!? Yes, No? What could be wrong with my bus? Coach will be delivered to me in a few days. Beautiful 1987 Bus conversion. One more thing, will it take alot of strength to drive this bus:•( 22" steering wheel. Any feedback would be appreciated. So happy I found this group! Anne |

Last year when I was bus shopping, I test drove a 7 and one with no tag axle, a 5C I think. Both had a stick. Both shifted smoothly with no noise. I ended up buying a 9, so that experience was my only one with a manual transmission buses. Congradulations on fulfilling your ten year dream. I've been working on my 9 since last May. It should be mostly done by October. I can't wait to start using it. Ross |

Congradulations on your bus purchase! Quick question: Does your bus have a manual or automatic transmission? Paul |

Sure sounds like a description of a manual transmission. Richard |

In my limited experience, the manual transmissions on the MCI only makes a bang when the bus is sitting still and the clutch has not spun down when shifted into first gear. It might make this kind of noise also when shifting up through the gears if not properly double clutched. When the transmissions are double clutched properly they won't make a noise as they are shifted. Is there a little bit of gear grinding right before the transmission pops or bangs? |

It is hard to judge what the noise is by description, but it doesn't seem normal. I would certainly have the bus checked out by a BUS garage that is familar with MCI's before I bought it. |

If it's an Allison 740 it can have a very harsh shift from 4th to 3rd. The early ones did that. There is a "soft shift" kit available but due to costs, it may be better to shift it manually from 4th to 3rd. Jim |

My 1970 MC-7 has the same engine and transmission as yours. The only time I get any strange noises is when I make a poor shift and that will be a grinding noise. Other than that, with proper double clutching, no noises. You might want to check that the clutch is properly adjusted. Look behind the alternator (generator) and you will see a knob with numbers at the top of a shaft. You normally pull it up until you can rotate the knob, clockwise until you feel resistance. Then, noting the number facing you, back off the knob 1 complete turn. Then let it slide back down the shaft, which locks it in place. I'm not sure if that is your problem but you need to know if the clutch is set up properly any way. Other than that, get someone who is used to shifting those old Spicers and hear what they have to say. Good luck. I think the "7" has the greatest classic look. I love mine!! Henry |

Sorry, My MCI-7 description was not complete:•( 8v71 detroit 5spd Allison. "Automatic". Friend told me it makes a "bang" sound when shifting. I'm not sure which gears, maybe all of them? I will know very soon now. Delivery was delayed. Wonderful Group! Thanks, Anne |

I'm not an Allison tech, but if my HT740 made a banging sound when shifting, I'd be concerned. It has a smooth but firm shift with no unusual noises whe it shifts. It could also be something else in the drive train that's a bit loose. Ross |

Hi, My Bus will be delivered Wednesday or Thursday. Given the advise from this awesome group I am going to ask the present owner to make sure the u-joint is ok before he delivers it. I'm in Medford, Oregon & up late reading the posts:•) Something has gone wrong with my Digital camera, the Viewfinder screen is black, ac/dc also. Taking it in for repairs will have to take a number, haha I'm getting the driveshaft lever installed this week on my full size Bronco & also the Hitch installation done. $2,000 does that seem fair? lol So much to learn & little time. I have printed the archives from this group, I sure hope there will be enough room for it ALL in my bus, The only thing I know is that this Bus will put me in New adventure, good or bad I have resolved to Love it! Uh, how many fingernails will I get to keep, managing all the aspects of my bus?? Have to buy a laptop too, where does it all stop:•) Thanks everyone! Anne |
