I understand that there are surplus rv outlets someplace in Indiana. Has anyone gone to these outlets before? where are they ? and when are they open? |

Most are in the Elkhart Area. Elkhart, Middlebury, Shipshewana, IN and White Pigeon, MI. We went to most of them last October. Great Deals. We spent about $800, but saved about $950 over Camping world prices. George Myers sells a book that list surplus and salvage outleets all over the country. Click on Coach Builders Bulletin logo at BNO homepage. Email me if you need more specific info. Jack |

Most are in the Elkhart area. Below is a list that someone else posted a while back. There are also some good ones at White Pidgeon, Mi. which is nearby. Anyone thinking of Phoenix, may be better off staying home. I made an 800 mile round trip to a "huge" RV Salvage yard there last summer. Their website gave me the impression they had acres filled with every RV part imaginable. I had planned to buy most of my interior furnishings there, but didn't buy a single thing, even with pockets full of cash. The yard was approximately 75ft x 75ft, and 90% of the items were in really sorry shape. Some items (water tanks, toilets, steering wheels, etc) had been baking outside in the Arizona desert for many years, most of the interior pieces were 1970's vintage, and a lot of items were accident damaged. Almost everything was covered with dirt and grime. But the killer was the prices. Everything was priced very close to the cost of new components. And they wouldn't deal. I wanted a propane refrigerator, but didn't feel like paying $1300.00 for a 10-year old 6 c/ft accident-damaged model, especially since they wouldn't show that it still worked, and all sales were "Final!". My attempts to explain the qualitative differences between their items and new ones was met with polite indifference. A total waste of a weekend and $120 in travel expenses. Steve |

I was in Elkhart, IN. klast week. Disappointed. I used the list that Dennis posted. Call first as some are closed, some don't have much, some have only van items. Very few large items. Furniture that I saw was junk. C Ray |

C. Ray, as you know I was thinking of going to the Elkhart area salvage yards listed on the board and in George Myers' book. It sounds like it may not be worth the trip out from Colorado. Which salvage yards did you go to? Does anyone know if the pickings in the Elkhart area would be better in the summer? I was going to make a swing through the area to try and hit all the yards. Is it worth the trip? Darryl |

Darryl, I made the trip to Elkart and saved a bundle. Of the stores I visited I found that RV Salvage to be the best. Since the visit I have called and ordered a variety of things. Bear in mind that surplus stores inventory changes from day to day. If you want the contact there then e-mail me and I'll send it to you. Enjoying the journey in NC, Gene Lewis |

I was recommended to a great source of RV windows and doors in California. It is near Victorville out in the desert behind LA. Ron, the new owner, now calls the place 'Eagle CB and RV Parts' or something to that effect. He was painting the new sign just last week. It is on Palmdale road near the intersection of the 15 and the 395. Phone is (760) 947-7033. The guy had scads of windows, some still new in crates. There is a whole shed full of doors. Paid a buck an inch for the windows and 150 for the door. |

We just got back from Elkhart. We go so often, I refer to our Coach's decor as "early salvage yard." When touring a Surplus/Salvage store remember the three D's. They are dirty, disorganized, and dated. The dirty and disorganized are self explanatory. The merchandise is dated, because most is surplus left over from last year's production and sometimes many years ago. Do not go looking for a specific item, example Colman Roof Top Air Conditioner, instead look for any roof top air conditioner. We have never returned home without one or two bargains, usually a lot more. This trip we bought an off brand formica at $16 for a 10 X 8 sheet and carpet padding for $1.50 a sq yard. We did go with the these two items on our list. Then we also purchased a few little items, that George couldn't pass up. We filled the back of our van. A few years ago I purchased upholstery material to redo my living room couch. I paid about $5.00 a yard. The man who did the work said he couldn't buy it for less that $25 a yard. Below are a few items we have purchased for the coach over the years. Our 50 amp shore line with Marineo Connection $50.00 Baggage Door from 10 to 12.50 each Windows $20 each ` Putty Tape for Windows $2.00 a roll Exterior Doors $40 each Driver's Seat 132.00. One of our best buys all electric and extra wide. Honey Comb blinds $10 each Fits an RV window 2 Duo Therm air conditioners for $850 (With warranty) for both 2 passenger seats all elect with foot rests $250 for both 25,000BTU suburban furnace $225 (With warranty) Velvac all electric mirrors $150 Doors and windows are everywhere. As is carpet, vinyl, and material. There are lots of electrical and plumbing parts. Some laminates, wood, air conditioners, furnaces, microwaves, awnings, blinds, hot water heaters, shower pans and doors, sinks, stoves, refrigerators, couches, chairs, lights, speakers, and radios. We have a few stores that we always visit, and some that if we have time we visit. Others we dismissed after one look. You have to enjoy scrounging and be flexible with your wish list. If the only reason you are traveling a long distance is to visit the surplus stores in the Elkhart area, I don't know if it is worth the expense. If you are passing nearby, I would say, don't miss it. Also, some will ship items to you. Good hunting Sue Myers Epic Conversion Support The Coach-Builder's Bulletin |

Most ot the none Indiana MFGers have surplus stores. We purchased much of our conversion from Winnebago (Forest City, IA) as it was close to Minneapolis. I understand that there is a big one in Red Bay Al (Alegro) and olso some in OR. You can also check www.ronthebusnut.com as Ron deals with a lot of surplus. |
