I'm most likely gonna be buying a 35' bus with a DD 8V71, manual tranny, next week not far from Jonesboro, Arkansas. I need to know of a garage to have it checked out before finalizing the deal. I live in California. thanks, ken

Ken, I did the same thing- you know- a thousand miles from home and don't know a soul. SO, call long distance information, and get the name of a bus company, charter company, Detriot/ Allison dealer, truck shop, etc, and call them. Ask for who, and how much. Make arrangements for them to look at/touch the bus for several hours. Then hope the guy you hire isn't the sellers uncle! Keep us posted, Good luck, and Cheers...JJ

I agree with JJ, except:

Instead of calling long distance information, use the internet yellow pages - much faster & less expensive! Some categories to search:

Bus Lines
Buses - Charter & Rental
Buses - Service & Repair
Engines - Diesel
Truck Dealers - New
Truck Dealers - Used
Truck Repairs & Service
Etc.

Be sure, when you call any bus company, to ask for the maintenance department, preferrably the shop forman. When he comes on the line, explain what you're inquiring about, and, if he can't/won't help, if he has any suggestions who might. If this coach is already converted, indicate to him that you're interested in having the chassis evaluated, not the house systems.

For the house systems, back to the internet yellow pages for RV dealers & service centers. When you talk to them, indicate you're looking at a GMC motorhome and want the house systems evaluated. Don't mention the word bus at this point, wait until you show up at their facility - and if they give you any static, remind them that they agreed to evaluate the house systems in your GMC motorhome - which is what you have. (This is where it helps to have talked to the shop forman and have his name handy. . .)

OH - if you haven't already, email me with the VIN and I'll tell you who originally purchased this coach from GM.

Hope this helps.

Ken,
according to The Bus Pages 2000 Edition, these are the only places listed in Jonesboro. They are:

Dove Conversions
34 County Road 402,
Jonesboro. AR 72404.
870-935-5132 or 800-918-7083

and a Charter Company:

Great Southern Coaches Inc.
900, Burke Avenue,
Jonesboro. AR 72401.
870-935-5569 or 800-251-5569

I have no knowledge of these companies, good or bad. Hope they can help you.

Good luck. Say Hi on your way home if you are passing through Kingman Az. on the I-40.
Peter.

JJ, I had already looked at some of the listings you mentioned, and your comment regarding "the seller's uncle" has already crossed my mind. Am wondering how many folks have their hands in each other's pockets. How do ya pick one without praying?

RJ, thanks for the wisdom of having the chassis and house system checked at different places. I'm old enough to know that I need to learn from other people's mistakes. I may not have a lot of years left to learn from my own. I'm getting my 1st bus at 52??? Must be some kind of a nut, huh?

Peter, I'll letcha know how those references turn out. Thanks...for the invite, too!. Where can I get a copy of Bus Pages?

Contact the maintenance supervisior of the local city transit system. Ask if a mechanic would do a "moonlite" check for you.

I live in Pine Bluff AR. and believe I have looked at this bus. Is it just a little west from Jonesboro? If this is it ,it was a very nice looking bus. Do not know about mechanicals. I am 210 miles from there. I did not have the money at the time and now own a 04. Let me know if I can help.

What do you mean, 52? Hey ken, I was 55 when I started mine, and did all the work myself. (except some heavy lifting stuff with my brother's help.)Prayer ain't going to hurt none! At 52, you know what a good vehicle "feels" like. Let the pros take a look at it, then take it for a ride. If it feels right, then take it home. LOL Cheers...JJ

I'm officially a "bus nut" as of the 27th when I bought the title. Took possession of it on the 30th, and it's at Central DDA in Springfield, MO being pm'd for my trip back to CA where I'll spend about 2 months reworking the interior, then it's on the road for a month or so!! Thanks in advance for ALL the advice I'm gonna be needing. If ya answer this, please do so here as I can't hook up to my ISP from this port.
