RJ: Yes, it is safe. Mexico is as safe as the US. But, it is downright different. I have here traveled extensively for many years, have owned a home here for 7 years, and retired here full time this spring. A lot of what you hear is old wives tales and rumors, listen to those who know first hand. There is No reason to believe that you would get your bus taken away, unless you are in an accident and are not insured. No need to repeat it here… see http://www.rvaa.com/articles/rv_mexico.php3 and also see http://www.co.san-diego.ca.us/cnty/travel Parts… getting unique parts here can be a challenge, but getting parts from the US is no big deal. How far to go? Don’t stop till you get to Costa Rica, a very cool place. Seriously, main highways are narrow and sometimes rough, don’t plan on more than a couple hundred miles a day. Take your time, and enjoy. The “Frontier” is the first 100km along the boarder, to go beyond you need a tourist visa. To get that you need a passport or birth certificate. In Baja, the end of the Frontier is about 25 miles south of Ensenada. Do It! Don’t pass up seeing a new and wonderful world… Don’t be an ugly American with a chip on your shoulder, read what phred has to say about it… http://www.phrannie.org/mexico.html If I remember right, you are on the west coast; if so, I am in Ensenada. If you want more particulars write me off the board… peter at sdi-baja dot com Peter E |

In the larger cities they can fix anything. MCIs are running in Mexico so you should be able to get repairs if you need them. Instead of one big shop there may be a lot of smaller shops that do different parts of a job. |

Oh, and don't think that it is only older buses running in Mexico. They are running newer and nicer buses in the first class service than the US and Canada. You will also see things that look like a hybrid between an MCI and an Eagle. It can be a bus lovers dream to watch the different buses go by. Nobody has private buses and motorhomes are uncommon so it would be nice if your toad were too not uncommon so you can mix a little with the locals. They make a lot of cars there, Ford, GM products, VW, Nissan but no Toyota. |

Actually, I just got back from Mexico. On Monday, I had a one-Day consulting gig in Tijuana, and spent the balance of the week at my regular consulting job in Mexicali. In Mexicali, they have some real cool crowns, fixed up for shuttling workers back and forth to the Maquiladoras. also they have a bunch of skoolies, but I don't pay them too much attention. In TJ though--Holy cats! they have every kind of bus you can Imagine (OK I didn't see a articulated Gillig). Everything from the "Little" bus that at least one of our members took to school every day up to MCIs, Prevosts, and of course Bluebirds (My Favorite). Many of the busses have had the exhaust modified, to run out of the rear bumper and up the back of the bus. Some of these are chromed. Truly weird. I presume this it to get the (HOT) exhaust out from under the already sweltering bus. As for "Newer and Nicer".....Um....didn't see any of those. I was only on the border though. Gary |

Oh--Yeah. In El Centro (This Side of the border, across from Mexicali), there is a place that has some busses. I stopped by on Saturday, but they were closed, so I don't know if they're for sale. Gary |
