John , I believe Da book calls for advanced timing for any injector from 65 up, so if its advanced it's for the amount of fuel being inserted , not the tip style.

Rebuilt injectors are $55 each at the injector shop here in high priced CT.

Have seen "genuine DD rebuilt " for about $43 from mail sources.

What prices are you getting?

Unless you are changing the head you must stick to the same injector body. What you have now is HV-7's drilled out and converted to N-70's, which means someone must have upgraded the pistons to the "N" series and advanced timed it 12 years ago. This is (was) such a common practice that you can still buy rebuilt injectors with the old body style in the "N" series. People who deal with marine diesels would have these sitting around.

Geoff , My Greymarine 6-71 diesel is untouched from 1944! (it sat in the can for most of those years ).

Rated 225HP at 2100rpm with advanced timing as all the Navy rated engines had.HN90 installed

Will I have a problem if I downsize the injectors from HV90 to HN 60 , and not touch the engine otherwise?

HV 60's are still avilable , so if the N tips are a problem , its no problem.

How does "better" atomization " (from newer N tips ) need different pistons?

You have to stick with the HV's, Fred, unless you change the pistons to the "N" style.

Great info, Thanks ,

Will get the HV 60's and save $$$ core charge .

But still wondering why different injectors require different pistons?

I can understand the big injectors need for A timing , but not this, just wondering?

Are the old style N series strieght injectors the same as the new style N offset injectors?

The HV injectors are the "old" straight style , and to NOT have to purchase a new rocker arm & new jumper tubes , the rebuilder modifyes the guts to accept the "modern" N style guts.

The injector shoppe has no knowledge of the need for different pistons , they have been selling them as an "upgrade" with better fuel milage and less visable smoke , mostly to fishing boats & in gen sets.

I have a set of HN-70s that I bought "New" rebuilt with less than 10K on them. I replace them with N-60s because the 70s were smoking so much black smoke. I also thought I might pick up a few MPG more. With the N-60s it doesn't smoke any now but I picked up very, very little MPG if any. I have prob put about 20 K plus on the N-60.
But I am only getting 7-8 MPG. But I am geared at 4.125 rearend and top speed is 65-67 @ 2250 rpms. But I don't know if I want to part with the HN-70s or not. I have a 671 4 Valve I want to rebuild and I already have the rocker arms for the HN type.

Bring the cruise RPM down to 1950 and the fuel milage will shoot up.

I always drive between 57 mph 1850 rpm and 60 mph 1950 rpms and that is where I get the 7- 8 mpg

Tuck
I think I also have the same rear end and cruise at 70/73 2150/2250rpm on load and with my 7kw powertech pulling from the same tank I get 6-8 mpg
On diging futher the striaght N-70s I have were a replacment for the HV-70 in the 1970s.My timing is advanced and no matter how I drive, or if its in the mountains or on the flat land IT WILL NOT SMOKE.It will heat up but and the hotter it gets the less power, but it will not smoke.

If you can cruise at 73-74 mph @ 2250 rpms you probably have a 3.56 rearend.

Took a while , but the new issue of Boats & Harbors finally came.

Master Mechanic 1.800.877.8350 is offering Remanufactured Detroit injectors by DDS for $43.00 exchange.

This is best price I have seen , but have no idea on quality of DDS rebuilds.

(the usual disclaimer = NO I dont own the company.)

There price on many items seem very good tho.
