I have been shopping for insurance and not having a lot of luck. most don't insure bus conversions, the only one I found, GMAC wll only do liability. I intend to be using and driving it right away, so I wanta little more coverage. I did a keywoird seach, but most of the posts re 1 or more old.

HOw are you all insuring your rigs?

I will be paying $79k for the shell, registering in Montana via an LLC, and keeping it in southern ca.

Progressive says they do not insure bus conversions, Gieco would not cover anythign with a new purchase price over $100k etc

Progressive are one of the main conversion insurers. However you have to
get their coverage via someone like RVAA. (800-521-2942) There have been a
few States that their coverage has been withdrawn from, but I don't think
Montana is one of them though.

Royal insurance covers conversions too. There is also a broker called Thumb
Insurance or something like that.

Be careful of insuring it as a regular RV as any get-out can be used by
insurance companies. People do have State Farm covering their conversions,
but I wonder if the Company actually knows what they are insuring. A GMC
bus or one of those front wheel drive GMC motorhomes?

You mention State Farm. I have had my conversion with them for 18 years. The only thing I had to do was get an appraisel and show the appraiser the receipts for the items that I put in. He mainly wanted to see the expensive ones, like fridge, furnaces, a/c, etc. They insured it at my saying for the value till I had it finished, then insisted on the appraiser to see it and take pictures. This is in Canada so I don't know how State Farm is in the US. Bill

Bill,

In previous discussions about insurance, it appears that it depends upon the agent you use.

Mine, at the time, could not get a realistic quote from State Farm, even though they carry 5 of my vehicles and my home insurance policies. It was double what I was being offered through RVAA.

I have my Freightliner insured with State Farm for the moment until I get it converted and then I will see who will give me the best coverage for my money. I don't go for cheap, never have. I want to be sure that the insurance will pay out, if and when I need it, and State Farm have always been there for me without any problems.

My point about the name GMC was about the confusion that could arise, and when some quote very small premiums compared to others, and I do understand about different area rates, one wonders if they do actually have adequate coverage.

"registering in Montana via an LLC"

You do understand that you will have to pay business rates for insurance, this is not the same as a privately owned coach. Also, the cost of insurance is a deduction for the LLC

You are so right about the agent. I see it even here when you talk to other owners. They have the same insurance company but the rates are totally different for almost the same vehicle. State Farm has always treated us well even the time my wife rolled our Explorer. They wrote it off and paid us more than we expected without a problem. We now drive Chrysler products though. You are right thou when you say don't go by price alone. Check out what you are covered for. Bill

In NY State Farm only charges me for 6 months on a one year policy for my motorhome (not conversion) as long as I have a car with them. My previous agent tried to charge me the full year!! One of the reasons she is my "previous agent".
