Hello again everyone - a V730 question...bus I am looking at fitted with a V730 and the owner has passed that he needs to manually shift from 2nd to 3rd because if he doesn't, it won't shift until 1600 - too high. I know some adjustment can be done, but is this a common problem with those units or indicative of a deeper problem set?
Cheers,
Matt

My V730 shifts from 2nd to 3rd at around 2250, or where the governor is maxed out at. That is where it should be. First to second shift is a lower, but I can't remember what it is. The shift points are regulated by the valve body, which can be removed by dropping the pan, and sent to an Allison dealer to be recalibrated.

I've been waiting for Matt to answer because I think what the owner was really telling him was that it shifted too soon at 1600 unless he kept the selector in 2nd and manually shifted into 3rd when it wound out. Allisons for diesels do not shift like an automatic in a car-- they are designed to shift when the engine is wound out so you don't lug the engine.

if its shifting too soon the 2-3 shift spring could be broken or maybe its lost its tension. all the shift springs are adjusted via a cam that rotates it has 6 posistions if all shifts are short then it will need to have the main pressure set either of these will smoke the high clutch pack if not address.

Sorry for the lag in my response - been off line for the past few days. Geoff - indeed you are correct...I had written what he said down wrong. I re-contacted him and got the straight scoop. Good learning point for me.

Thanks again,
Matt.

I had a problem last summer where my 730 was shifting very irratically. Scared it was gonna cost me! Fortunately turned out to be easy fix.
The spinning governor which was easily removed had a TINY shaving of metal causing it to stick. Cleaned it, installed new filters and a synthetic blend trans fluid and been fine since. fwiw, Joe
