Look closely at the right end of this unit... see the power take-off shaft or it's safety housing?
That 4 inch extension is causing me some problems mounting my Genny in the bay. I asked a few people what it COULD be used for & an auto A/C unit was suggested as was a hydraulic pump for leveling the bus. I'd REALLY like to whack that stub off and complete the install as I had originally planed..... but frankly, I'm not positive that a PTO wouldn't be useful down the road. SO... When in doubt, hang it on the Board for the rail birds to squawk about..! Can anyone see a viable use for the PTO or is it just a worthless little appendage that I'll never miss...? |

Which actually would be useful & it could be "unbelted" when not needed...AND I have a spare single stage 2-cyl head that would work... Pretty good for openers Bruce! |

Jack, I would be careful here. For one thing, unless the governor is set up to compensate for it, putting any kind of extra load on the tailshaft could adversely affect the generator output; at minimum, you could see frequency drop from 60Hz to something lower, and possibly the voltage as well. The other issue is that, unless I am not seeing this right, this shaft actually protrudes from the generator head rather than the engine crank. Before putting any kind of side-load on this such as a pulley and belt, you need to be certain the end bearing in the head is made to take that load. You could check your manual or consult with Onan to find out. FWIW. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

This looks just like the shaky, noisy, 500lb+ monster (without the stub shaft) I removed from my bus because it drove me crazy! The exhaust system heat is also unreal! I never could find points for it either. Changing to electronic ignition seems to be the favorite method of solving that problem. |

Gus, points from Cummins/Onan were $20.00 plus shipping, cond. $10.00 plus shipping. Like you I pulled my 5kw Onan, cause it would not hold 60hz. replaced it with a 3000si Honda. |

* Sean... I gave that aspect a dollars worth consideration, being a DF, that was all I could muster before my knowledge & experience ran out of draft. Here's what I know for sure, this unit was built to Mountain Bell spec's for remote location B/U at relay facilities (Mtn.tops). The Tech said they were test run for 10-15 mins. once a month & for 90% of these units, that accumulated test run time was all that was on them, they were automatically rotated out of service at the 6 yr. point. secret:...it happens to be the 3rd biggest expenditure in this project, got it for 30% of new. The Tech said he often wondered why it was ordered that way, they never had a use for it either. He did mention that they may have had an alternate use somewhere else in the system unrelated to the type of facility common to the SW & his service area, & piggy backed the specs for both. . . Oh, it had almost 200 hr's on it. (and , just between you and me, this who thread was just a troll to suck you into providing a mirror in which to project my conclusion & see if the reflection was accurate..... now I'm really worried..... about YOU, agreement with radicals (me) results in tangents... you might want to do a 10 point reality check when you fuel up. ...and stay away from Martinez...he's a virus I tell you! mouse milk and all. * Gus.... It's closer to 175#'s because i can still wrangle it into/out of/on/off/up & down any place I needed to park it. At my size leverage & balance are considerations long before lifting becomes an option admittedly but I can dead lift it at least a foot, high enough to get it on a 2 wheeled doily & then tip it up & drag it across the walnut sized stones that grace the lot where the Bus moored. Exhaust...Plan A ..Have the manifold glass beaded & ceramic coated along with thier new connecting tube AND the short length of flex tube which will connect to the new & larger muffler. (it NEEDS to be coated as well but I'm on the fence over it....$) and then the outlet, under & 3 ft back from the bay door. Exhaust wise, I'm duplicating something that worked impressively quiet, back in the day. Ceramic & wrap will give me a leg up on the "old system" I'm modeling on, as will the intake/ cooling air sound baffles & filtration/splash arrestor's in the lower & side open areas. Experimental yes, logical yes, expensive NO, functional? time will tell. Plan B--- what ever I run across that works better, costs nothing & is easy to install or far better at some aspect than it is intended to be presently... in other words...PUNT! Points... potential home for that Pertronix system that I refuse to use on my priceless American classic/historic/SPO daily driver? Maybe...doubt it tho. Thanks for the heads up, when I can find some points, I'll buy a bag of 'em, this is going to be like owning a Triumph or a B'ser, only it's points instead of spark plugs! * DAVE, Dave , Dave..... always the thorn in the crotch of the union-suit. I was cruisin along, already got the cutting wheel chucked in the grinder, just-a-waitin for a consensus here !! WHACK !!...and it's done with... Sean's right... drag that motor down with another drain on the crank & I'm asking for a learning experience thru the pocket... not good for little grasshoppers. Now I COULD retain the shaft and use it for ANYTHING I dam well please just as long as I don't expect 1 watt of power or greater than governor speed... AND a pressure washer is just as useful as an Aux Air Compressor. But the truth is, I'm one of those clowns who think pressure washing is just a poor mans steam cleaning. * Ralph.. I got no buddies in the Genny Biz, I'm a naked Rube waitin to be "treated right" and $20 a shot is expensive whiskey when you're used to Shine. BUT.. I am a local Boy, which means I pay a different price than I would if I rolled into their parking lot in a "Corvette" with say VERMONT plates & said, "Howdy! can you fix this?" while wearing say a Pelosi T-Shirt.... . . just sayin..... I mean, we see a lot of "stuff" headed for "Caly-Fore!!-Knee-Ya? or Naw-Vaw-Duh ! (what is it with people always puttin the emph-a-SAS, on the wrong Sill-ALL-uh-bell anyway?) & the locals feel a need to send them on their way, slimmer, ya that's it, slimmer than when they arrived AND with a story to tell all of them rich "Back-Easter" friends they surely have. You wouldn't believe what the City does to those SnoBirds who like to play golf here in Jan. You learn to play in the "assumed" position after you've assumed the position when you paid for a round on a Municipal course. You need 7 of God's best friends as co-signers to play a joint like Westward Look... & then you run the risk of rabid Coyotes. So that means I'm not sold on a AC or an A/C or a P/W.. and having the potential of having ALL 3 possible together...? Still not enough to counter the value of extra cooling air space I'll gain IF I just whack it off. ALL good ideas tossed on the table though, and at least Martinez hasn't chimed in and offered some mouse-milking machine proposal. I get the feeling that unless there is a hail mary pass from some Einstein in the weeds... the PTO 's hours are numbered.... WEASLE option..... compromise Whackin 2-3/4 inches off, leaving a working stub for a single sheave ( that I won't have room for anyway w/o moving the Genny) platform) That way i'm covered for potential uses & have the space I want for air passage... BUT I'm still open to better logic, more experience or a potential use that's still off the table. there are fish in the fryer that need to come out before this one goes in. Onan Genny's.. They WERE made in Mini-Soda- ya-sure-you-betcha back when I was still addicted to shoveling snow as a distraction from the cabin fever/no sun existence I enjoyed there. I had a lot of acquaintances & friends who were employed with them. They were a first rate operation then, good to their people, good reliable products and they stood behind their work. .....and gas was a buck. I have my fingers crossed.... everything's a 50/50 crap shoot anyway... I't like the old Butcher used to say... . . . You do the best you can with the fingers you have left and don't worry about who swallows your mistakes no one will ever notice anyway... .. . . The following announcement is brought to you by our Host, Ian, who feels it is desirable, necessary & informative to tell you that I din't use my spoll chacker and that I consistently make #@%ing grammatical errors.... and now, take it away IAN...!! Dammit, used up all my coffee time de-sigh-FER-en this post. I had to use grease to slide a Jennie into the Silversides, no room for rollers. And speaking of rollers, we use them for everything! Boilers, oil tanks, radiators anything 2 people should not be lifting. We always have 3-4 lenghts of 1 1/2 and 2" pcv in the back of the trucks with 2 ramp boards. Save that back! Good luck with the gennie. |

Ralph, At the time I didn't know Cummins had taken over Onan, this was a few years ago. I replaced it with a nice 6KW liquid cooled, gas Honda. Quiet and vibration free - no comparison. Jack, My Onan was a 3ph 7.5KW model changed to a 1ph 5,5KW. Can't tell too much from your photo but it looks the same to me. It required a separate starting battery because the flywheel has a built-in 1.5 amp alternator to automatically charge the battery. If you hook it into the bus battery it will foul up the bus alternator regulator. Been there!! Both the engine pistons move together and fire at the same time?? Strangest thing I ever saw and probably the reason for so much shaking. I didn't figure this out until I noticed the distributor cam only had one lobe! Don't let those rubber cushions fool you, this thing will shake your whole bus! This thing is made for concrete pad mounting, not the flexible metal of a bus. I'm a pretty old wimpy guy so I had to use an engine hoist to remove it and it bent the 1000lb rated cart I used to move it! Some more free advice, no charge! Wrap that exhaust system with at least two layers of EHP wet blanket insulation. I cut mine into strips to make it easier. Ceramic coating may do it but I doubt it. This thing puts out the HEAT! Don't forget I warned you!! You must be a philosopher or a journalist!! (Message edited by gusc on December 05, 2010) |

"Both the engine pistons move together and fire at the same time?? Strangest thing I ever saw and probably the reason for so much shaking. I didn't figure this out until I noticed the distributor cam only had one lobe!" I am guessing it actually had two coils. This is also very commonly done on two-cylinder opposed-twin or inline-four motorcycles; both plugs (or each of two sets) fire at the same time, but one cylinder is on the power stroke and the other is on exhaust. The plug in the exhausting cylinder is firing harmlessly (and needlessly), but it simplifies the ignition system (no distributor, just a cam and points in the old style systems, or a CDI pickup in newer ones). Just guessing, of course, since I haven't looked at your particular setup. In opposed (boxer) twins, BTW, the pistons always move together, as it is the most balanced configuration. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

Jack, I was going to suggest that you cut off enough to get the genset in the bay but leave enough to put a sheave on. But if it was me, I'd think real hard about pulling the cover and maybe the rear end bell off enough to see if the PTO shaft can be unbolted. I have seen some of these shafts that were removable. If it's NOT removable, then you aren't going to hurt it by driving a 1-2hp compressor from up close to the bearing. Especially if you just belt it on for emergency. If you have a partial load, the genset engine might well run both the compressor and some electrical output but on gensets it's normal to shut off the electrical load when running a PTO. The normal genset is designed so the engine will stall before the gen end burns so it won't have any extra HP available. That compressor likely will need 2hp (about 3KW) to run. |

Input!!! ....cool... last to first Barn Owl, best answer I can give was for relay towers. Jim...I agree with you and I occupy the territory you've outlined, most of the shaft is soon to be history...no lookin back. The PTO shaft IS also the crankshaft so I'm up a creek or painted into a corner. Sean... Single coil & twin cylinder...like 1/3rd of a Corvair motor. Gus.... I'm lucky...go back & looat the pic at the top of the page... in the lower left corner there's a string of Vibration dampeners, them puppies are going in, between the platform & the frame. They're rated at 200 lb's max each & I'm using 4 . And I have my fingers crossed that I don't have vibration or sound that's beyond reasonable. I'm a master of heat control so that's in the bag I expect. I crave free advice Gus and yours is always welcome .... and expected! I'm faking this whole deal based on opportunity/sweat equity/a dimes worth of knowledge & experience & more help from the O.E.M. than I can comprehend. And just like everyone here, including Mr. Palace on wheels, I don't want to hang myself out to dry on a bad decision based on deduction rather than experience. You're Ok with me Gus...no matter what they say.... David... I make an effort to control what seems to be cryptic to others, it's just that my thinkin brain isn't connected to my fingers, they have their own mind... Mostly I just sit in the back seat and read what their typing if I ain't listening to the ray-Dee-Oh! Coffee fuels the whole distraction, but I'm a Wuss, it's only half coffee & half water..... it keeps the pipes awake & the bathroom light active if nothing else. BusWarrior... Well, YA...!!! SHADOWMAN..... Did I ever tell you I made films for SHADOW Racing..? The fan deal... there's already a fan behind the screen that surrounds the PTO. I'm as dumb as a thumb when it comes to compounding a single fan with another. It can be done Im sure, I'm even sure there's someone here who could do the math & comes up with the size, pitch & CFM numbers. Me...I don't know what a whole mess of 9's add up to. But I know you weren't headed in that direction anyway. I did actually consider an enclosed blower that exited above the Genny for cooling before I realized that was like the starter motor/Generator conundrum ...it uses more power than it can cool... see...I'm not the Einstein in the weeds! I think we're both spectators... have you seen the beer vendor anywhere? Well I have to say that it looks like there going to be a circumcision..... Maybe I should hold a Genny Bris...? Eich...what a Mashugana !! http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mashugana&defid=1260058 I don't see any weeds rustlin in the wind... maybe Einstein's on a coffee break or fuelin up.... . . . Sean, It's been a few years but, as I remember, the pistons travel together and are side by side, no opposed cyl. I'm really trying to forget that monster but people keep trying to resurrect them!! Jack, You're OK too, I like your style!! After you do this project you will be well experienced! I'm very much looking forward to your completion report! However, mine had those monster rubber cushions also. It allowed all that mass to move in every direction and shake 24000 lbs of bus! Since yours seems to be much lighter maybe it won't shake your bus so much - maybe! |

The PTO shaft on the Onan Commercial is made for the telephone and utilities company to power a hydraulic pump to power the man lift. I had a 6.5 Onan Commercial Emerald with the PTO shaft to power an A/C compressor for the air conditioning in my sleeper. Worked incredibly well. Had the compressor only running at 1,000rpm-so it lasted well past the first generators 12,000 hours. You can run anything you want up to 100% of the power of the engine-which is typically about 14hp. Good Luck, TomC |

Gus, a lot of the early Honda twin motorcycles ("vertical parallel twins") had only one set of points and fired a waste spark on the exhaust cylinder, too. As a matter of fact, many of the early Honda 4's had two points, coils, etc. and had two cylinders set up in pairs. And those early twins especially would shake like a dachshund passing peach pits. So, you very well could have had a "parallel" twin engine (cylinders side by side, pistons moving together) with only one set of points -- and a lot of rockin and rollin! |

Jack, the parallel twins *usually* stagger fire but the spark plug spark X degrees before TDC on both power and exhaust strokes. I say usually because there was an NSU that had a common cylinder head -- in this case, it fired on "both cylinders" at the same time (but on the other hand, it was a two-stroke). We called them a "twingle". |

Jack, depending on your diet, Some of them float... Some Don't. Let us all 'member the rotary engine with two rotors along with leading/trailing spark plugs. Three lobes per rotor, two spark plugs per lobe. Then there is my Kawasaki engine in my little JD lawn tractor, two coils, two plugs, two cylinders... both coils fire at the same time. The problem there is that if one plug gets a broken ceramic, the engine will not start because both coils are shorted to ground. (Ask me how I know this). 1948 Seagrave Fire Engine... Packard Straight 8 engine, Two Distributors, 32 spark plugs. Worked great, one as a main distributor, one as a backup..... Except when some dummy grounds out the points on one end and the other end is automatically grounded. Again, No Start! The dummy was me in the wilds of Canada, bringing back said fire truck from Adak, Alaska in 1978. Mack Maxidyne with the gasoline conversion. A spark plug on each side of the head. When one didn't fire, there wasn't enough heat generated to fire the whole cylinder, It would run ragged until the engine got warm, but fuel mileage sucked until you found the plug that was messed up. I love my Detroit! |

Jack Jack Jack. tsk tsk. Your writhing lashing fits and attempts at belittling one of the greatest hound breeds ever points to the fact that I must get there as soon as possible, your cure/exorcism will begin with taking you on a long ride in the Volvo with Swedish folk songs on the stereo in continuous loop mode. I have plenty of duct tape to restrain/secure you for your own safety. after that while still taped, you will be laid to rest on a LOW mat where 4 of my assistants will pile on and around you, their heavenly auras will suck out the remaining Corvair demons that may have remained after the cleansing Volvo ride. after that you will thank me for the clarity and peace that will surround you. |
