We'll, if you were looking at a DD engine at, say, an auction, and the engine was just strapped on a pallet, How could you know if it has been equipped with a Jake Brake? ( I admit I have no Idea what it looks like)

Jake will have taller valve covers with two wires coming out of the valve cover that go to the buffer switch on the governor.

Chuck,

A Jake equipped engine will have the tall rocker covers. Also there will be a wire coming out of each head. Usually at the flywheel end. They may be in little rubber grommets, or sometimes just comming out under the rocker gasket. Also there will be a buffer switch on the buffer screw at the gonernor.

Does the Jake kit use the factory valve covers with a spacer, or, are the factory valve covers replaced with aftermarket ones? How much taller will they be with the "Jake"?

Either way. About 3" taller.

Jakes are usually whole "spacer" pieces, 2-3" thick, that are sandwiched between the valve cover and what it (the valve cover) "used to" bolt to. To the naked eye they look like a 2-3" thick spacer that's sandwiched between the valve cover and the rocker box, or head, however the engine's built, and they have an electrical connection coming out somewhere to activate them.

Here's a picture compliments of ebay, of a typical Cummins jake brake. This one is for two cylinders of a 6 cyl engine. It takes three of these in this case. They all look kinda like this...
