I have my cabinet drawers built. One side of the cabinet has an opening 19 1/2"W. The other side has and opening 14 3/8"W. 3 drawers in each opening. The drawer slides are 1/2" wide per slide. That makes the opening smaller by 1". So what does the dummy that layed this out do you ask? The 19.5" opening has drawer boxes that are correct. 18.5" total width. The 14.375" opening wasn't so good. the boxes should have been 13.375", which would have worked perfectly. So Did yours truly do that? NNNNOOOOooooooo! Some maroon created 3 beautiful drawer boxes 15.375" wide. Now I have to drive an 80 mile round trip to go buy another sheet of cabinet plywood to build the newboxes. Can yyou say STOOOPPPPIIIIDDDDD? |

Dallas, Too big is always better than too small! Can't they be salvaged, if you cut only on one side? If not, I haven't built my cabinets yet so.......Just kidding! Steve Toomey PAbusnut |

Paul, you have a great idea... I'll save them for the under bed storage. Richard, they are 18" deep drawers, and the wife really doesn't want them any shorter. 4", 6" and 12" high. Steve, I thought about cutting them but I used through dowels in the front end sides, mostly for more glue surface, partly for looks. cutting that would leave some weird looking sides unfortunately. Gomer... I've done worse, but if I cut it off twice I think it'll still be too short! Van... Daddy always told me, (See Thread Title!) |

"Measure twice cus once." Never use a ruler, doing furniture, measurements get confusing. A Tic stick will carry pencil marks , and save them for weeks , no remembering or thinking needed. Use a knife to make the markings if you like close fits , pencil marks are wide! If you need inside storage ideas , get a book or three on upgrading a boat. FF |

This happens to me more than I care to admit. Fast Fred has got it. I was as told this many years ago, am still learning to apply it as much as I can. Can't tell you how many times X 3/8" turns into X-1 3/8" or just X 5/8" and occasionally just X!@#$%^&*. The closest measuring involves holding one piece next to the other and marking with a knife, I also have a tiny set square for lining things up. "If you cut it too short, just keep cutting 'til it fits". |

Thanks for the tic stick idea guy's. My dad taught me that years ago and I had completely forgotten about it. I use many marking methods, regular pencils, carpenter pencils, mechanical pencils, pocket knife, Xacto knife, I even have an old marking gauge made by my great grand father in the 1800's that I still use. |

I'll try to get a picture up of the drawer boxes today. I think they look rather good. There are no drawer fronts on them yet, they are just boxes, I am waiting on my new-to-me band saw which should arrive tomorrow so I can resaw some of my Osage Orange into thinner strips. |

Often had the same problem running cable. You cut it three times and it's still too short. |

Pictures of a couple of the correct size boxes. I used 1/4" dowels along the front sides that I'll trim off with an orbital sander. I also used Gorilla brand exterior wood glue, (not the normal Gorilla glue you are use to). On the back sides I used glue and 1 1/4" 16 gauge brad nails from my air nailer. Yes, I have a dove tail jig I was going to use, but my bit is so dull it does more burning than cutting so I went with dowels as opposed to box or finger joints. There is still a lot of glue joint surface, and in an experiment I made a small corner this way with 4 dowels then after sitting 24 hours I tried to pull it apart. 2 dowels broke, chunks of both the edge glued side came out and pieces of the surface side came apart. So far I'm very happy with this glue. (Message edited by Dallas on January 02, 2011) |

"So far I'm very happy with this glue. " Dal..... has it occurred to you that the glue, & it's fumes, MIGHT be the reason for the error in measurement..... you might be one of those people who get loaded sniffing Library Paste....(mmmmm) |

The drawers look nice and robust , but a length of 1/4 round glued into each corner would almost double the glue area at no cost. Should the drawer get loose full of heavy stuff , it might help. Sailors love overkill! |
