Jake, others may have a differing opinion, but in my mind the differences between most brand names of coolant is minimal. In our DOT shop over the years we've purchased several different brands, so far as I could tell, there is no one great coolant. In fact, for the last two or three years we have utilized an antifreeze recycling machine and I can't say that we have suffered any adverse results. So, my thinking is, find a nice sale on quality antifreeze, and you are good to go.

There is a vast difference between Diesel antifreez and whats usually used in cars.

AS DD's are so old in design they were OK to run on just water, BUT the antifreez does about 10 things besides cool.

What ever brand you chose be sure to use a cleaner , flush a bunch of times by driving her warm , and flush again.

Final mix should be with your choice of antifreez and the rest 50 to 65% distilled water.

Change every 2 years , by Da Book , or 4 like most do.

Detroit Diesel specifies a low silicate antifreeze. Not all automotive stuff is low silicate. I use DD brand and find that the additives (SCA's) are still right where they belong. This, compared to Prestone, etc. in my genset where the SCA's were very low in the same time frame of 1 year. DD's is more expensive but I know it's good. I'll use it again.

I can certainly agree with Jim, low silicates is a good thing, and I'm also quite certain that DD coolant is superb. On the other hand, according to first hand experience, the only adverse cooling system developments our shop (of over 20 mechanics) have experienced, had to do with silicates, as Jim mentioned...and we believe it had to do with mixing of incompatible coolants... three occurances... in over 20 years, in literally hundreds of vehicles, mixing all kinds of coolant together, some years adding Nal-cool (a coolant additive) some years, none at all.
I do believe it is better to be safe than sorry, so if DD coolant gives you an extra feeling comfort by all means, I myself will add Nal-cool to my system.
Absolutely, flush your system and thoroughly, and distilled water IS the absolute best accompaniment to your coolant. No more than a 50-50 concentration of coolant, though up to 65% water as Fred mentioned is fine. You could add a little soluable oil for the water pump...
