I have a 83 MCI9 with a 6v92,I have tried to start it 3 times since I bought it in May. It will turn over but wont start, I put a 24v priming pump in the system and ran it until fuel came back to the tank in the return line. The bus will start on starting fluid but wont continue to run. I try to start it about 5 or 6 times at 30 second intervals, is there something I am missing. Thanks Gary | ||

It seems highly unlikely that all the cylinders went bad at the same time so I would see If my fuel pump is working | ||

It sounds like your fuel rack is closed. Check the stop cylinder and lever on the top of the governor. | ||

good answer stan the fuel rack is more than likely frozen shutoff and you are getting no fuel. but you are killing your motor BIG time using starting fluid, even in small amounts, there is no way that i would use starting fluid no my bus engine. if it is cold apply some form of heat to the engine,even a 2-300 watt lite bulb under the pan or a block heater is great to warm it up but never starting fliud.it has to be a fuel problem so make sure you have fuel in the tank and that it is getting to the rack as it is very unlikely that all the injectors failed at the same time. mel 4104 | ||

If it will start on starting fluid, then die, you need to check your blower shaft. If your blower (not your turbo) is not turning, you are not getting any air to mix with your fuel. | ||

"there is no way that i would use starting fluid no my bus engine." The use of Ether as an alternate fuel, below freezing , when there is no block heater or electric is considered normal. There is no harm in a tiny shot (1 second) into the ether cup , thats why its there! (When below freezing only!!) The use of Ether to prime a warm engine can be disastrous . Far easier to use WD40 (kerosene) and not worry about broken stuff. FAST FRED | ||

Modern starting fluid is a proper mixture of volatile, highly flamable liquids and lubricants and when used properly will cause no harm to a detroit diesel engine. If used on a hot engine detonation coul;d result however most diesels can absorb detonation of that sort. large quantities of starting fluid could cause damage | ||

There is no emergency shutdown on the series 92. If your blower shafts aren't turning when cranking, then your engine gets no air and without air no fuel will burn. Ether isn't a magical substance that will burn without air. | ||

when i worked as a hd meck. on construction we hhad 27 guys in the shop and the rule was that if one of us or an operator was found with a san of starting fluid you were fired on the spot. you were there to find and fix the reason why it would not start not add to the ruin of an engine. as to a little bit you can get a lot of fluid out of a can in one second. also most people go to the back of th eir bus . squirt it bown with fluid and then go to the front and try to start it. this way you get all that fluid on the first few cylinders and this is what causes oil washed off thecyl. walls a massive explosion that cacses broken rings and bent rods. but then again use it if you want, there are a lot of mech looking for work, how i will not. not time no money. mel 4104. | ||

Bus started, I put the ether away for good.The fuel shut off on top of govenor was closed, when I pulled the lever it retracted.I cranked engine over and white smoke started to come out of the exhaust and it startad on 2nd try without ether.The engine ran for a couple of minutes and shut down,Ichecked sight gauge on coolant tank and it was low. I guess that the sensor was not in the coolant and it shut the fuel off. Thanks I,m learning Gary C. |
