I own a 1970 MCI-7 with Detroit Diesel & automatic transmission. It was running fine. The next second no throttle response. When floor pedal is depressed & released the spring action works fine. In the motor compartment the lever on top and rear of engine appears to be moving (throttle I assume). What could be wrong? Motor idles but bellows smoke. mrpuppy@cox-internet.com |

The emergency shut down in the air intake is tripped. A lever on the side of the air horn above the blower can be turned to reset it. |

If you want to play a trick on someone new to buses, especially a GMC where the mousetrap is so easily reached, spring the trap manually when he is not looking, then ask the owner to start it up so you can see how it runs! You might even learn some new cusswords. |

Hmmmmm. . . I always have heard that the mousetrap on a GMC is the clutch assist mechanism mounted over near the transmission - not the emergency shut-down flap on the blower. FWIW, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

a spring loaded flap that covers up the air intake when the trigger is activated....mousetrap...really..it doesn't fit with the other uses..just my opinion |

R,J. no trigger,no "snap",no reset.... same thing on a harley.....better definition for them would be "spring assist" of course , you can call anything anything....you could name it frank if you want...free world.. |

RJ I have wondered about that too. To my knowledge Fred is the one that started calling the clutch assist a mousetrap, but then again that might be a correct name for it, even though I agree it seems to be a very inappropriate name for a spring assist for a clutch, which has been around for many decades. Aa I recall, ONLY the 4104 had that as an option, and it was NEVER referred to by mousetrap name on Harleys, Dodge trucks, or other applications. Personally, I do not care for them at all. |

I've never heard the Harley unit called anything else. Search on the Internet, for Clutch Moustrap. Most of the links are for harleys. I do agree, that I don't care for them, if you notice on the link, most of the links give you "Mousetrap Eliminators". Gary (Biker since age 8, currently riding '98 FLHPI) |

Oh now you had to go embarass me Gary. You are correct of course, the internet is full of the use of the term on HD machines, but never on the Dodge truck that used the same thing - or GMC buses. I have to say however, that all I had for transportation during the 50's were surplus police 74 FLH stuff, foot clutch, hand shift, and I cannot recall EVER hearing them referred to as a mousetrap. Must either be something the young kids dreamed up recently or my alzheimers is acting up today. I noticed Fred was careful to say "nicknamed mousetrap" when describing the one he made up. Anybody got a 4104 manual so we know exactly what GMC called them? How about HD types, any MANUAL reference to them? We gotta get our terminology right here you know. |

The "mousetrap" term follows the over-center assist, or snap, action. To the best of my knowledge, the foot clutch Harley didn't use it because your foot is strong enough to operate the clutch without spring assist, and the linkage rod went directly to the release arm from the clutch pedal. At least, as I remember it... |

No, it had a spring I am sure. Remember it would rock into the engaged or disengaged positon, and stay in either place. This was done with an over center spring device AND a friction device as I recall. |

Hey Don (Both of you) the mousetrap was, I think 52 to...to...67(?) not sure about that one. Those are spring assist units, for hand clutch. The foot operated clutch pedal had an Over-Centering mechanism to hold the clutch open, like when you came to a stop light. This was not a "Suicide Clutch" A Suicide clutch is a straight connection between the pedal and the trans. It was "Suicidal" to have one of these because if you couldn't find neutral, and the bike leaned to the left while coming ro a stop. You were going to fall over, kinda like the guy on the tricycle on laugh-in. The rider never thought this was funny though. I've never heard anything else called mousetraps (Other than things you catch mice with), including all the Dodge, GMC or any other references, untiil recently when I started hearing the DD Air door being called that. I have always heard them called "Air Doors" of Emergency Shutdown doors, as I said, untiil recently...I think by bus folk. Gary |
