I know, I hate those subject lines that don't explain what the thread is about. But it's almost halloween. So consider this - The coach has already passed several of my tests, and I do plan to get it somewhat checked out by a pro. (so far so good - it's in very good condition) Would you consider this MC9 if it were you? |

Wow - that's strange! The written part of my post was posted before I had a chance to add the image. I had to go back and resize it to get it below the board's 20K max. Spooooky! |

Chucks, At least you know what mileage it has showing. Mine didn't have a odometer or a hubometer. If the motor starts easy and with little smoke, runs clean from cold, has little or few oil leaks, tranny drives nice and the brakes (check for wear) and steering look and feel good, consider buying it. Another things to check are the sound of rusty metal tinking down inside the bay doors when you open them, also look inside the spare wheel area, in the engine compartment and fan area for rust and cracks and also in the bays for same. Look down the sides for straightness, especially at floor level, any bulges could be trouble with rust. Think of anymore possible trouble areas and then, if all is ok, buy the bus. In my opinion, MCI is one of the best for conversions, squarer roof curves, clean lines, parts availability, low purchase price than some, and there's nearly always a mechanic that can work on a Greyhound in a town. Good luck. Peter. |

Chuck My 04 had 1,500,000 miles when I bought her. Some say that was low miles althouth it has not been a grehound. I,m told Grehound keeps them until they reach 5,000,000 any one have the inside scoop? John |

My 04 has around 3 million on it...... Chassis will only wear out from an accident or corrosion.....everything else is a replacable item |

The scariest part is that the speedometer lasted that long. Most don't. Jim |

With that many miles it is probably on it's third or fourth engine/transmission rebuild. So it should be running fine if the drivetrain is recent. What is not so obvious to find is how the steering and axle bushings are, stress cracks from so many miles, and just general wear and tear on everything. I have looked at buses with 500,000 miles on them and buses with 1,000,000 miles on them and the soundness of the bus is obvious between the two. --Geoff '82 RTS CA (purchased with 580,000 miles) |

Yikes! That is scary! I think I see a ghost in the reflection. The mileage, you mean? All depends on how the coach was maintained. I would not fret the miles if maintenance was good and rust is minimal or non-existant. |

Well thanks for the encouragement, folks. Rust _is_ non-existent. Amazing. Here's good news for older coach owners, esp. MC9ers - yesterday I passed by the Greyhound maintenance facility close to where I live and there were as many in-service MC9's as all the later models combined. 'Course that may mean they spend all their time in the shop, but it was interesting to see that many still in use. I have pics as proof! |

Chuck - Are you sure those weren't MC-12s??? 'Hounds got a lot of those still in their fleet, but no more nines, according to the roster posted on Strayhound. The MC-12s look almost identical to the 9s. . . but they're actually a 96A3 below the floor and an MC-9 above, sort of a hybrid. Tell tale signs are: square headlamps; larger, black mirrors; larger A/C condensor grill; rectangular taillight pods. Many, btw, have been converted to S-50s w/ B500 World trannies. Maybe even the one you're looking at is a 12??? The plot thickens!! 8^) RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Dang! Just when I thought I was ready to take the test for certified busnut, you step up and show me I still have lots to learn. I wondered if they would change out _all_ those head & tail lights! The side panels look a little different also. I forgot about 12's - don't have much info on 'em. Thanks for the further edjicashun! --Chuck |

In the mid 70's, so the story goes, Greyhound, who owns MCI, came to them with the proposal to build a coach that would last 30 years and three million miles in service, they came up with the MC-9, of which there were over 10,000 examples made. While the MC-12 is an upgrade of the MC-9 Greyhound it is still running MC-12's and plenty of MC-9 are still in service across the country. Brian |

Man, that's the least I can do, with all I've learned here. All boards are different, and this one's more 'different' than most! ;) Unlike many others, the image you want to post should not live on a web server, but rather your hard disk. The process is somewhat obtuse, but hey, who's complaining... To begin, you need to make sure beforehand that the image is smaller than 20Kb. This is somewhat limiting, but it is a good thing. You can fix this up in your image editor. Then you put in the following text into the body of your message where you'd like the image to go: "\image{MyBeautifulBus}" Then you post your message as ususual, and at that time there's a placeholder in your preview. Then you post the message and only then will you actually select the image from your directory structure on your hard disk. Then you post and theoritically, that's it! Here's the description in the 'formatting' section of this board: "\image{ Text description } Upon posting, you are prompted for an image file to upload. Images must be either GIF or JPEG format. Images must be saved on your hard disk. Your browser must support form-based file upload (It must be a modern browser). "

Wow!!!...less than 25K until you have a brand new coach. Then you can change out the speedo for one that reads to 100 mph sosss you can race the State Trooper cars! |

Chuck, that MC-9 in the picture, is that the one with 9 hundred K? If it is, and its as nice under the skin as it looks on the surface of it, it's a keeper. Brian |

BrianMCI, the one in the photo is not that unit, but believe it or not, the million miler is in even better shape than the one above. Almost no dings, no rustola, southwest life all it's life! Going to drive her tomorrow and I dearly hope to post soon that I may now join your exclusive club. BTW, I'm keeping a lookout for the logo/nameplate for ya. I've seen a few 8's & 9's that _should_ be parted out! Thanks again for the encouragement, folks. |
