TDear John I am truly sorry you are not going to be visiting our county anymore. We have a great deal to offer our guests. This problem has been brought to our attention and we have taken it very seriously. The reason RV's are not allowed at the Flying J has nothing to do with local campgrounds or local government. This is a state imposed law that has been passed. It states that no more than 5 vehicles are allowed to spend the night at a location unless it is a designated campground. About semi's, for some reason they are not regulated by the same laws that the motor coaches are. This is something that was sprung on us, we had no warning of this. My office is located across the street from the Flying J and I see that sign every day. I would strongly encourage you and your organization to lobby with the state of Ohio for resolve, not ban our great county. Ashtabula has served as not just a stop, but a destination for motor homes and coaches for decades. Please do not blame the county or the local campgrounds, this problem has nothing to do with either. It has been enforced on us just as it has been enforced on you. This is not a "local campground thing" as you stated. If you and the group you represent have success in lobbing this matter with the state, I applaud you. We would love to have your business and respect once again! Sincerely, Mark Winchell Special Projects Coordinator Ashtabula Co. Mr. Winchell, the Campground Owners and Operators of Ohio lobbied fiercely for this law, just as is being done in Florida. Most notably Homestead, also Huntsville, Alabama. (Personal experience with ALL of these. Greed drives them, and let us pray that someone finds a solution to this problem. A similar law was passed to keep motorcycles and ATV's off Ohio Public Lands...pushed through by the various horsemen's associations. You cannot camp in some of Ohio's (tax supported) parks unless you have a HORSE with you. My recommendation to my fellow travelers? Go to PA, or KY to vacation. Lots of nice camps just east of the OH/PA border, and you can't tell the difference by looking out across Erie! Fishing? Kentucky has more great spots than Ohio can even dream of! Michigan is good too, but has a real mosquito problem, and Indiana is a sportsman's/hunter's dream. Due to these and other even more repressive laws, this Ohio resident of 50 years is now in Las Vegas! Viva`La Difference`!!! |

I got same e-mail (but mine said "Dear Lorna". This guy is changing his tune. His first e-mails were posted online and they were totally different, also must be getting a pile of them since he is now using a form letter. This impacts all of us, not just the ones who travel/stay in Ohio. If Ohio gets away with it then other states will. For those of you who would like to read what started all this here is the original thread "Ohio bans overnights in Flying J - time to start writing!!" http://www.rv.net/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/12872705/srt/pa/pging/1.cfm Here is a link to follow up on the thread "What is the final word on the Flying J parking story? " http://www.rv.net/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/12891100/srt/pa/pging/1.cfm Please e-mail these folks to express your opinion. Let them understand what they have at stake. I believe it all started out at a county level due to a complaint by a local campground owner (or as a group). From what I have read it was county level not statewide until folks started e-mailing the state (along with the county). I also think the statute was misinterpreted by the county (deliberately or accidently?) and now they just won't admit it. Flying J is not a campground, nor have they ever actively encouraged anyone to stay. I think of Flying J's (and other Asphalt boondocking sites) as places to stop and get some sleep along with a few supplies, fuel or meal. It is not "Camping" or even "boondocking". The campgrounds who look a that places like that are not loosing any revenue. Folks who Asphalt boondock wouldn't stay in their campground anyway. How can the campgrounds complain, they don't want kids, pets, rigs over 10 yo, tents, pop-ups or they are Class A only. If campgrounds are so afraid of losing noney then they need to start looking at their fees and add-ons and exclusive rules. I wonder what the local /state campground association's e-mail is? Guess I will try to find it and post. I feel this mess probably starts with them or at least one of their members. Lorna |

i agree.... i have been turned away from the KOA in austin texas because i had a 1977 holiday rambler... nice clean....it was "too old""... and i was a "worker"....i think its time the capgrounds took a look at the pricing on overnighters.... i stay in a VERY NICE campground/rv park in houston..... lots of amenities....pool. laundry, bathhouses....it's expensive, but very nice....i've seen other campsites complain about the business that were loosing to walmart campers, and ive stayed overnight... drycamping...in a sam's parking lot....i hope that this doesnt hit texas.....too many winter texans, maybe??? |

Want to contact the Astabula county campgrounds? Here are the e-mail address that I just posted a letter to. I have a sneeking suspicion that at least one of them was responsible for the original complaint. Also included is the Ohio Campground owners association. Let them find out what a few greedy individuals is going to cost them! Here are all the e-mail addresses that I could find for the Astabula campgrounds along with the Ohio Campground Owners Association nicely listed so that you can just cut-&-paste into your e-mail address box: sandman@suite224.com, bayshore@suite224.com, cccrodgers@alltel.net, buccaneer@ncp.net, geneva.parks@mail.osp.ee.net, HHCAFamilycampground@juno.com, info@indiancreekresort.com, keniseegrc@ncweb.com, lake-village-at-pymatuning@juno.com, kathleen@orwell.net, pymatuning.parks@dnr.state.oh.us, windy@suite224.net, NDOCOA@aol.com, caves@hockinghills.org Who the e-mail address belong to with the dates they are open. If we dont do something then we will not be able to travel across the country and fuel and go when we want to. They will be us in all states if we dont try to do something about it.This is what I wrote to them all. I understand Myself and my family are no longer welcome in the state of Ohio. That is you will not allow me to when tired stop fuel up and pull over for a few hours rest at one of the Flying J Fuel stops. Therefore I will not be again visiting the state of Ohio, and I will strongly suggest that my fellow FMCA RV people consider the same. John Rigby |
