There were too many threads with no relevant information so here's my question.

I need to flush out the power steering system on a mci 8 and refill with the correct oil...what's the best or easiest way to do this? I have the factory manual, but it only describes how to fill and get the air bubbles out.

Disconnect the return line (the low pressure line from the front) where it goes into the reservoir. Run it into a gallon can, and start the engine. Idle until the reservoir just goes empty, and stop the engine. Be aware that the engine will not stop with no air pressure built up, so know how to stop it by pushing on the governor shutdown lever. Fill the reservoir with new oil, restart, and run that fill thru the system. At this point, look at the oil coming out, and if it is clear, you're done. If it is still dirty, run another reservoir full of new oil thru, until it comes out clean. Then reconnect, and follow the factory left and right procedure to get rid of the air. Then refill as necessary. Look at the level a few miles down the road, to make sure all the air came out, and the reservoir is really full.

Jerry, I would start out by unhooking the lines on both ends, see what comes out and if it is slimmy stuff, blow them out with mineral spirits. It won't take a lot when you use air pressure. the pump and the box can be cleaned also that way. Most cases ther is a filter in the line at the pump area and change that and refill with the new fluid. Check for how much DA BOOK says and keep working it to the amount needed. The filter can be filled like anyother filter. You maybe able to let it gravity fill a good bit before firing the engine. Hope this helps

Thanks guys...I know it doesn't have oil because a tiny amount leaked out and its red and appears to be some other fluid.

Da manual doesn't have very clear pictures so where is the resevoir and filter located? How do i determine the "low" pressure line?

The filter is located inside the reservoir. Undo the top and it is inside. The low pressure line is the larger one of the two. The one that goes to the reservoir is the low pressure one. The high pressure line goes directly to the steering box from the pump on the engine.

Forgot to mention the red fluid is probably Dexron transmission fluid. A lot of guys use it in cold climates so you don't get pump squeal when it is very cold out.

There is a high pressure filter on the right rail by the engine.

HI Ed
I forgot that S O B (some other brands) use a high pressure filter. How are you keeping these days? Hope to see you at G.L.A.S.S.

Hi Bill,
We will see you this summer, but may go West for a couple of months. West, as in, "out West" US, not Michigan.

If we don't see you at G.L.A.S.S. hope to be at the Back To The Bricks rally in Aug. Would be nice if a lot of the guys on the board showed up. It was real nice last year to meet Jack Conrad. You put on a great rally.

Filter: Guys, I have followed everyone's information and am ready to begin the flushing and bleeding of the steering system. However, when I removed the cover and filter within the canister (reservoir was empty)it seemed small and I'm not confident it is orignal. Does anybody know the part number for this filter in the cannister?

thanks

My power steering filter inside the resevoir is
3 3/8" in dia X 2 3/4" high with a 7/8" hole in the center. It is wrapped in a wire mesh. The Fram part number for it is C1678.

Did you check to see if you have the high pressure filter that Ed mentioned as well? Maybe the PO removed if you can't find it. I can't see why you would need two filters unless this is the way MCI does it. My GMC only uses the filter in the reservoir.

Got the power steering system flushed and filled with oil vs transmission fluid...test drive coming soon.

ps: Here in houston I had a heck of a time finding a company to replace my 2 windshields without buying it from them...wouldn't do it if I bought them myself. Finally I found a shop who will do it at my house for $120.
