Is it permissible to install SLA batteries in the same compartment as my Heart inverter? I know that you shouldn't have regular lead acid batteries there, but I don't recall the verdict on gels. |

Hi Darryl, "sealed" lead acid batteries (Gel cells, etc) can and will outgass hydrogen and oxygen although not as much as wet cells. As long as they are ventilated to some degree and not in an enclosed place where sparks or ignition source can occur, they're fine. This was a potential problem (boom!) for underwater diver scooters and such...the cure was and still is inclusion of a small catalytic converter to turn the gasses into water, just like some specialty battery caps do. In a confined non vented space I would use Sealed AGM. They do not vent. They can even be installed in any position. Jojo |

I had a altenator intrenal voltage reg stick and kept charging, damn near burnt up the joint. Having gel battires I took them to the distributer in our area ( San Fran Bay). He felt sorry for me a gave me 2 new units. He also showed me that they are not 100% sealed. They had lost several pounds compared to new ones ( stuff inside boiled out). If you look very close you will see ity bitty vent holes. Question, why even take the chance putting them where they are exposed to blowing up? |

Jojo, CalifBob is correct. No matter how "sealed" you think any style of lead-acid based battery is, even gel cells, they DO outgas if they are overcharged and they DO create explosive gasses. There is no such thing as a completely sealed lead-based battery, unless the manufacturer has incorporated catylitic cells within the battery to recombine hydrogen and oxygen back to water. I'm not aware of anyone who makes something like this a part of a battery. Bottom line, please DO vent your battery compartments even with gel and "sealed" batterys of any type, or you may be in for a rude surprise! Cheers Gary |
