hey fred i just bought a big old battery charger when i saw the picture of it i thought it had a built in volt meter when i got it, it did not anyway i read your battery basics piece and was left with a whole lot of questions the charger just has a timer and five settings 6v, 12v low, 12v med 12high and start i have four group 31 750 cca batts and i just want to keep them charged they are maint free so i feel them to make sure they dont get even warm how do i tell if they are fully charged and can i over charged them with them without knowing it i put the charger on 12v med at about 10 amps for about an hour is a volt meter the way to check their state of chargeas always thank you very much |

WHAT You probably have is an old "constant amps" style charger. These are great at restoring deep cycle batts , as the strong charge 10A , at the finish brings the batts back to 100%. Unfortunatly they work best with batts that can be slightly overcharged and have water put back . IF your batts are sealed , they are prob starting batts and better left to the engine alt, as that has a very slow finish. Your unit would br great for restoring sulphated deep cycle batts , with a good pulser to break down the sulphated plates. FAST FRED |
