and hope this one doesn't get as carried away as the, ahem last one, but anyway...

Had an incident this morning where I HAD to break BACK into my home by damaging the door locks on our french doors leading to the master BR. Fixed it temporarily and went to went work. On the way home, I stopped at out local HD and picked up TWO new lock sets. BOTH packaged individually and BOTH on separate shelves. I couldn't find a matching pair in ONE package so I opted to go the route of two singles. I get home and proceeded to install them and after it was said and done with no problems, I tried the KEYS (2 for each) and what I found out to my surprise was that BOTH sets are keyed the same meaning that all 4 of the keys work in either lock. I find that a little strange. I looked all over the packaging on both sets to see if it mentioned that ALL lock sets were matched but nowhere to be found. Is this normal or what?

Only so many combinations of pins possible so it is not impossible to get two locks with the same key.
This is why we went to the electronic locks.
It lets you set more than one code so set a master code only known to family and use the other for guests then change it between guests.
No lost keys and if the code is lost just set a new one

Now wasn't that better?

About 10 years ago we went to the Menard's where we lived, (It's another box store), and bought 10 "American" brand padlocks.
I've always detested carrying a bunch of different keys so I spent about 15-20 minutes matching up the keys inside the packages, just by looking.
They were very high quality locks and we still have all of them and all are keyed exactly the same.
The best part was that they were on clearance and we got them for 50% off the marked price which was 75% off the original price. I think we had a total of about $6 in those padlocks.

Dallas you can demand excellence all you want but as long as were wearing the meatsuits provided by the OEM to play on this plane it ain't going to happen. be happy with close enough, or look into your dogs eyes, or create more recipes for penguin meat.

You can have any of the higher quality locksets re-keyed. Have them keyed to a new key, or have a bunch (same brand) keyed alike. Most small lumber yards have the "box" of tumbler pins to rekey for you. Takes about 2 minutes each.

Any "keyed alike" locksets I have bought for jobs were always within the same packaging, although I have seen keyed alike sets taped together.

With the demise of the local family owned hardware store...

Used to be you could order a whole box of padlocks keyed alike, in whatever size you wanted.

Darned clerk at the box store asked if the car had air conditioning... automatic reaction from his old job at the car parts store...

down the tubes we go.

Yes, Jack F is my mentor.

happy coaching!
