Personally, I would stay with the drum brakes. Disc get very expensive and if you overgrease them even just a little, dont get them hot cause you could get a fire. I have seen a few trucks and buses burn up that way. That is my opinion, but to each his own. I would call Bendix, Eaton, Rockwell and see what they say about them. Talk to some owners with them. When I worked for a bus charter company, we bought a few couches(MCI's) with them and within 1,000 miles replaced them with drums cause they caused too much trouble. I would look into it alot before doing it.

All of our newer tour coaches are equipped with disc type brakes on the steering and bogie axle, and are proving to be very economical and trustworthy. They still come with drum brakes on the drive axle, but it is just a matter of time until the drums will be considered out dated. The industry has had some very bad experiences with disc type brakes in the past, mostly on class 8 tractors and trailers, a lot of these problems have been corrected.
With that out of the way, I personally do not believe you would ever recoupe the cost involved, either in actual dollar value added to your O4, or even in the bragging rights of having the only one. You are facing some very major modifications to your entire axle assemblies, and I doubt very seriously if it would ever be worth it.
Just my opinion.

ONE thought is that drums are now being made in very different quality levels.

Stock stuff is very cheaply done and for a very few bucks more real nice machined drums are avilable.

With new soft shoes, new drums and a full pressure treddle valve ,

{rather than the soft stop , don't toss the paying folks on the floor valve,}

you can squeel the tires at 70+ ,

or throw the cat thru the windshield,

so why spend big bucks for anything else?

New pads , and lock bolts ect are very reasonably priced.

Try LUKE for the entire setup,888 COACH 34

Fred, what do you mean by a full pressure treddle compared to the "soft stop" one. I too have a 4104 that despite the brakes being tuned properly, will not stop anywhere near as fast as the Geo Metro that just pulled in front of me so close I can't see his car at all. (Well, maybe just a wee bit.) Can the treddle be adjusted or the air source adjusted?

SOME treddle valves have a limit to their pressure output, so the stop ability is limited, to keep the pax upright.

Find a knowledgable parts supply and get a full pressure unit.

This was covered in BC years ago in an article.

as is usually the case i have to agree with fred and also say once again that having many years of pushing 80 to 120k lbs down the road for a living if you are having problems stopping the coach with the stock brakes you better make sure everything is in good working order i would be surprised if ypour pushing 50k good stock brakes will lock them up at any speed air brakes need to be right and it would be in anyones interest to get schooled on those systems if they have them on their coach i dont have a problem in the world with my drum type brakes i do have 3 axles but 2 axles should work just fine.
