I acquired about nine "Forklift" propane tanks. Anybody know about these and if I can use them for the bus? Gary |

Gary, Make sure the tank valve delivers vapor not liquid Propane as some are designed to do. Mainly tanks for cars and other machinery can feed the liquid Propane to the "carb" and vaporize it there, wheras most appliances draw vapor from the tank. Probably can be revalved or may have outlets for both applications. Peter. |

that's what I was wondering about--I think these are setup for liquid, and there's no place for a valve in the "Vapor" position. I may just go trade them in at the local welder's supply. Gary |

You can revalve them and the new valve will have its pick-up going to the top of the tank so it is in the vapor area. Most RV tanks have the outlet valve screwed into the lower half of the tank. Peter. |

Probably will have to buy new valves anyhow. The new ODP ? type. Richard |

The OPD valve conversion is only for the BBQ type bottle of various sizes, fixed tanks are not affected...... Funny that, isn't it. Do I hear Scam?????.... LOL. Peter. |

When I worked at an RV place, we routinely upgraded the portable tanks to the new OPD valves. But we never upgraded a forklift type tank to my knowledge. The OPD valve is specific to the size tank. Forklift tanks are exempt as far as I know but they will withdraw liquid not vapor. Probably best to take them to a propane dealer and finagle a trade for the tanks you really want. Scott |

Yeah, I guess so. A local Welding supply place already told me they'd take them in trade, I also have one of those 6-tank storage containers made of expanded metal. thanks guys, Gary |

forklift tanks are horizontal tanks... they are clamped in a cradle on their side... bbq tanks sit upright.... |

Peter, the "BBQ" tanks you refer to are actually "DOT" tanks and the fixed ones are "ASME". They are regulated by different agencys and have different requirements. the "ASME" tanks already have an overfill protection device. Jim, DOT tanks come in both upright and horizontial models, the differance is the valve. I don't think you can retrofit a horizontial tank with a new valve; but you can convert a horizontial tank to an upright one by changing the valve. My 2 cents Dale |

Local propane fill station showed me that fork lift tanks usually have both a liquid and a vapor tap. Ones with only one tap may be vapor. |

Dale, My propane tank on my Apollo didn't have an overfill protection device as some nitwit overfilled it. We didn't know and after a weekend away, whist driving home, for some reason, maybe the sun on that side of the motorhome, the valve blew off due to excess pressure. Definately got our attention, thought a tire had blown. I had to let the outlet pipe loose the following day in a safe area and open the valve for nearly 10 mins to get the level down to the 80% max fill level. Boy did he get some gas in that tank!!!! Peter. |

I was in the propane buisness for a few years and any tank you carry into a dealer for refill that has a vapor type valve will have to have the new OPD valves. Most fork lift tanks are 30# tanks but it would cost you more to have a dealer convert the tanks than it would cost to buy new tanks. This is not a law. There is quiet a few ststes that do not require this new valve. |
