I have a MC-7 that has a real nasty squeal whenever the steering is moved. It sounds as if something is rubbing very hard against something as you turn the steering wheel. I was told I somehow got an air bubble in the power steering lines which is causing the noise. How do you bleed the hydralic lines to get the air bubble out of the system? Thanks for your input. It's not the belts slipping? Gary |

Mark, Where is the squeal coming from? The front end, the steering column, the back of the bus? A buddy of mine lent me his Winnieabgo, on a Ford chassis to drive 3000 mile round trip. I made it to the first corner and came back. The steering wheel housing where the cruise control plastic box which holds the coiled wires for the control buttons, was squealing so bad it was deafening. I fixed it with some brake grease where the plastic edge rubbed on the plastic disc. He had driven from AZ to Delaware and back many times with it like that. A Ford dealer fixed it for him by taking out the offending part and didn't say a word, he had to turn round and go back when he found his cruise control didn't work. He has MS and that cruise is very important for him. Peter. |

It's no Ford and has no belt. Low on fluid? Filter needs to be changed? |

I didn't say it was a Ford, did I? Or mention a belt, I was just relating a story about a sqeaky steering wheel. So far the complainer has not stated where the noise is coming from so there is no point in discussing anything until he replies as we may be advising about the wrong part. I always found that belts squealed and steering gear boxes and pumps made growling or grinding noises. Or in my buddy's case, something in the steering column was squealing. Peter. |

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear about the source of the noise. The squealing is coming from up front, somewhere in the box itself. I have checked and topped up the 90W in the box itself. I have checked and rechecked to make sure the power steering fluid is not low. I have turned the wheels back and forth many times, with and without the engine running. I have taken the steering column cover off to make sure the shaft isn't touching anything it shouldn't be touching. All to no avail. I still have a squealing sound that sounds as if two pieces of rubber are being squeezed past each other. I am at my wit's end (not a very long trip since some would refer to me as a half wit! ). Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try? Thanks in advance. Mark O. |

Mark, More questions. Does it squeal with the movement of the steering wheel without the road wheels turning, in other words during movement of the freeplay at the steering wheel? Have you tried turning from lock to lock with the wheels off the ground? Try using an mechanics stethoscope or the handle of a long screwdriver to your ear and the blade against the steering box, column, etc whilst someone else turns the steering wheel to try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Try turning the steering by using the road wheels to see if there is any stress on the column bushes. Are there bronze bushes in the steering column (top or bottom), they can squeal if they get dry. Could it be coming from the king pins or a seized ball joint? Peter. |
