While it can be done with a 6-71 , the fuel consumption would go up about 7 gal per hour , and the engine service life would be reduced by about 50%, probably a lot more. A swop to a modern engine can be done , just find a transit with a Cummins 8.3 or DD series 50, already in a V drive configuration and stick it in. Unfortunatly many have an auto tranny attached , but hard lookin should find a 5 speed stick. The series 50 is OK to hop up as its a very srtong unit. Your old radiator should be OK. FAST FRED |

I assume that your talking about a 4104- If so why not a d6v92 and a allison 730 that should help a lot.Thats 350 hp and if you want to you can get up to 400hp.Lots of luck- I just let them go and then I usually see them down the road. |

Hello Bster: You can get 44 more hp and a 33% increase in torque by just Turboing the engine. That is a pretty respectable 272HP for the size of the coach. The engine will have to have new cylinder kits, and the blower drive gear changed, and 4 valve head if it is not already, but it is do-able, and far less expenses than a conversion to a different engine. And when you get through, you will still have one of the most dependable engines ever made. Just one alternative. Mallie |

Hey, that might just do it for me, too. I too have the 170HP 2 valve 6-71. Am contemplating a 4 valve head. A lot more $ to turbo it though, but then it would go up big hills pretty good. Have you seen one done like this? Where does the intake/turbo/manifold/exhaust configuration look like? Anybody got pics? Jim-Bob |

Dear Bster, There isn't a Holiday Rambler in the world that will ever pass you that doesn't recognize the fact that you are a bus and they aren't. When you catch up with them at the next truck stop, they will be looking at YOU because they know that buses are King of the Road! Nevermind how fast you're going, a bus that is not even moving has it over the fastest motorhome ever made. They know this, and so should you. Always be proud of your bus. It doesn't matter when you get there, it just matters that you got there in a bus. And that's the way I see it. RT |

Hey, when I am behind the wheel of my bus, I am already where i want to be. So what if it takes a little longer to climb the hill. Jack |

Jack, I can't agree with you more. And if it takes longer to do the trip, well I am enjoying it even more..... But a few more horses would sure be fun to out run them Holiday Ramblers and know they REALLY envy my bus..... LOL. Peter. |

While getting a haircut, I ran into a friend,a recent retiree, with a lot more money than I have. This guy has had a several really good airplanes in his life. Should know good equipment. I mentioned motorhoming and he said he had gotten a new Winebago. I told him I had gotten an old Prevost and was getting it just like I wanted it. I acted like it was just an old bus. Didn't want to one up him. But I knew I was far better off. He does get better gas mileage, but who cares. Want to know something else, you builders. Every time I see a 4905, or any GMC for that matter. I stop and look. They may not let me in the Prevost club after I say this, but I love GMCs. Steve Fessenden |

The 6-71 with 2 valve head was rated at 170hp. In the trucking industry it was known as the 238. This is because with a 4-valve head, N65 injectors with advanced timin it is rated at 238HP. Going to N70s gives you a few more ponies and a lot more black smoke. |

Don't go with the N-70 injectors..I did and it smokes black like hell in pull it is really over fueling. I'm going back to n-60s. I just put a 4.125 rearend in mine and the top speed is 65 mph anyway..Whats the hurry the speed limit on 2 lanes is 55 and on the big I is 70. Just relax and enjoy the ride. I was recently at a camp ground. A guy pulled up in a 100K motor home 350 HP. He came over and looked at my ole rag and said he wished he had got one of those. Mine is a 1954 4104..ROFL Tuck-04 |
