We were given a Carefree Awning (no fabric just hardware and roller pole). It might be too long to fit on the side of the bus and still clear the slideout. Is it possible to cut the roller pole down? I've not measured it but it looks to be about 18 ft and we need 16 ft (maybe). Never seen how these things are put together either.

You must unwind the spring inside the long roller. If you just have the long tube and the arms are separate the spring is already unwound. Drill out the pop rivets that hold the end cap to the roller and slide out the spring as a unit. Cut the tube to the correct length and put the spring back and pop rivet the unit back. Make sure you cut the tube square and in one foot incrediments from the original length as the replacement fabric is sold to fit even sizes. It would have to be special ordered for an odd size and this would be costly. Check with your dealer to see how many turns you have to rewind the spring when you are ready to install the awning. Hope theis helps you. Bill

Check with a dealer as to what size would NOT be a special order. See if the dealer can provide you with the installation instructions. Most Tech's know what is what and trash them. I'm sure they would be happy to tell you what you need to know. The springs can be trecherious(sp?) and VERY dangerous.

On the same subject , installing an awning , is there a source for the track that gets riveted to the side of the coach?

I have seen the cheapo stuff at Campers World and wonder if anything more robust is avilable?

Does Zip Dee come with the same track as the lesser units?

Any source for "the good stuff" (if it exists.

http://www.rvawningsonline.com has good prices for awnings & replacement fabric (best I've found so far). They also have "parts" like awning track. I bought a track from them to use on the pop-up's bed ends (rebuild a hinge). Seemed heavy but I've not seen the stuff at Camping World so I can't compare. I think it is the same that all the Stag-Parkway distributors sell.
