I have three roof tops. The front one seems to have trouble starting. It hums as the compressor starts to run. I have replaced the capacitor and circut board to no avail. The only authorized service center in my area has retired. I talked to him and he told me to try the capacitor and circut board. Please email me at munent3@yahoo.com if you have any suggestions. thanks Bob |

I had the same problem with mine and it was the fan on the outside unit was stuck from a little rust. sprayed it down with wd40 and turned it by hand a few times then fired it up works great now. mine was a different make than yours but it might work. |

We had a problem with our (only) roof air on our long gone SouthWind S&S. When I pulled the shroud on top, the motor to fan shaft had rusted completely through and was no longer spinning the fan blades. |

Bob, We need you to be a little more specific. In a properly working unit, the capacitor starts the compressor instantly, and the fan comes up to speed in about 2 seconds. Please turn the thermostat up to its hottest setting so only the fan starts, and turn the switch on. Listen and tell us what you hear. Then with the fan running, turn the thermostat down so the compressor starts, and tell us again what you hear, and if the unit starts blowing cold air. The compressor will not start with an open capacitor, or a failed start relay if yours has one, it will just sit and hum, and the fan will blow warm air. Usually the circuit breaker will (or should) trip. Good luck, George |

George He said that he replace the capacitor and still does the same thing if I am right. Maybe the compressor is needing a boast and they make a hard start kit to plug in and they will work better especially when there has been or is some low voltage problems. I try to put start caps on some older units and it solves a lot of problems. Gomer |

Gomer, I did read carefully what Bob posted before I replied. I got my Air Conditioning Contractor license in 1991, and I am the technician in my business. I employ two installers, as I am not good at sheet metal. I just plain don't understand what Bob means by "the compressor hums when it starts." Do you think he means that it does eventually start and blow cool air, or that it doesn't start and just hums? I am well aware of hard start kits, and there are actually two kinds, one with a PTCR (solid state) which doesn't allow a quick re-start, the other with a potential relay which will allow an instant re-start. So, lets wait until we get a reply, so we can avoid having him replace more good parts? G |

George 10-4 on that. I like you hate sheet metal but sometimes have to tolerate it LOL. I have had my license since around when they made you have them. I worked at the school system for 18 years doin it to there also before retiring 2 years ago. BOB Let us know what is going on and I think that your problem will be solved sooner than later ... Hey Guys, I appreciate your help. I have not had a chance to get back outside and try the A/C again. I have to heat the coach up in order to get it warm enough to have thermostat work. I will get there this weekend for sure and get the info back on this board. I apologize for the delay. Thanks Bob |

SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG GUYS. I WENT OUT AND TRIED THE A/C UNIT. I TURNED THE FAN ON AS YOU MEN SUGGESTED AND THEN ENGAGED THE COMPRESSOR BY TURNING THE THERMOSTAT COOLER. THE FAN CAME ON IMMEDIATLY AND PRETTY MUCH RIGHT UP TO SPEED.WHEN IT CALLED FOR COOLING THE COMPRESSOR HAD DIFFICULTY STARTING. IT ACTED AS IF IT WAS A SLOW STARTING MOTOR WITH A HUM OF VERYING PITCHES AND DID FINALLY START. THEN IT SEEMED LIKE IT SHUT RIGHT BACK OFF AND RESTARTED AGAIN ONLY WITHOUT THE HUM. IT RAN THEN FOR AT LEAST 10 minutes AT WHICH TIME I SWITCHED IT OFF MANUALLY. IT WAS BLOWING GOOD COLD AIR WHEN I SHUT IT OFF. THANKS BOB |
