What is the best sealer to use where the aluminum panels overlap. I am reassembling the body on my Freightliner and although it did not have anymore than an 1/8th" fillet across the join from the skin to the bottom extrusion, I feel that some sealer in the joint would be a good idea before clamping and reriveting.

Butyl caulk is the most effective and lasts for years. It is also removable if necessary, unlike Sikaflex or construction adhesives. Prevost uses it on their panels and roofs.

3M 5200--Sikaflex is almost the same thing, 5200 is availabe anywhere.

Construction adhesive cracks and doesn't flow out very well.

Sikaflex is too messy and too permanent an adhesive, I need a sealer, there is a rivet every 2". The butyl rubber sounds better, can it be painted over?

The bucked rivets will not be replaced, instead pop-rivets will go there and 1/4" coachbolts with nylocs at each vertical brace.

Yes, the butyl rubber can be painted. Just the ticket for what you are doing.

5200/sikaflex are Polyurethanes are very paintable. Because they are Polyurethanes, they are compatible with Urethane and Polyurethane painting systems as well as being impervious to latex and Oil based paints.

I questioned whether Butyl rubber is paintable with Modern Automotive finishes, I see it listed as paintable with Latex and Oil-Baed paints, but the resources I can find don't mention any urethanes. My partner here in my shop (Veteran Auto body guy) Tells me that although Butyl is indeed paintable, but Polyurethane is the way to go, since Butyl never hardens.

We're using 5200 for a variety of applications here in our shop, and It paints very well, looks like seam sealer, but is a way better product.

"since Butyl never hardens"

This property is EXACTALLY what is needed between body panels , as they will vary in temp ,(And size) depending on season , where the sun hits the coact , ect.

Sikausa.com. .... they are located in New Jersey, as I recall. Ask for Steve Padgett. My guess is he'll set you straight. Great stuff, IF USED PROPERLY. Never hardens. But 5200 may be the same.

I have painted it with auto material. After two years, no problem so far.

Twenty years later, contruction adhesive is hard and brittle. OK for panelling in a house, but not a moving, twisting, flexing bus.
