I took delivery of my 4104 Sunday a week ago (Nov 2) in Milwaukee. On the way home to San Jose, Ca the oil filter blew its o-ring and the transmission pumped it self dry of oil, burning up many things in the process. I am lucky, I think, as on board where many new replacement parts except the planetary gear set. I need help in finding these parts if you can help I would be most grateful.

Does anyone know if I can put the transmission back together less the overdrive gears and bring my bus home? Before I pulled the transmission I drove it for a few miles and it seem to shift OK but would not go into overdrive. I want to do the transplant here in Ca. where it is warmer.

Michael,

If anyone has (or knows who has) the parts you need it'll be Ted Campbell at Coach Maintenence in Williams Ca. If you try to call him do it after 7PM and leave a message. Here's his web site, it has his phone # under contact us. http://www.coachmaintenance.com/
Good luck.

maybe I'm thinking wrong...but couldn't you take the cradel and all to the bus and 'adapt' the cradel to a 4104.....then all you would have to worry about is driveshaft, maybe move cradel around till driveshaft was correct length

Two Dog
There is a lot of work involved in this transplant and the area where the bus is located lacks the room inside to do this. Did I mention it's cold where it is, I am a Ca. boy and just can't do it. You know a whimp....

If I remember my maintenance manual addendem, the '04 Hydroshift was a planetary gearset mounted in the clutch area that provided an overdrive gear. As I remember, the transmission was the same 4 speed Spicer that is in every '04. If the trans and clutch are ok can't you drive it without the planetary gearset? Of course, you might need to split the bellhousing/ engine to disable the overdrive. Not much help.

These units were rare back in 1960 when the last one was made and had a reputation for being less than robust in design. I can't imagine a ready source of parts. Best of luck.

Jim do you know if the planetery gears from a vs2 tranny are the same as those in a hydroshift, as i have no books to compare part numbers but do have a good running vs2 tranny complete from the crank shaft end to the read axel pumkin, and i also have a 4512 in the yard that has a air shift lever on the side of the tranny that must put it in a 3 rd gear but as yet have not pulled the motor and tranny. mel 4104

I worked on one several years ago on my father's 04.....I seem to remember that it had a wet clutch as part of the setup and the trans was a little different to allow oil to the planetary unit between the trans and flywheel. Maybe the ratios were different also in order to split the gears evenly. (speculation ) We exchanged the 4:11 rearend for a 4:56 for a short time. It was fantastic that way. You could back up just by letting out the clutch with no added throttle: It still had a top speed of over 80. Only problem was, the ring and pinion set had severe pitting and growling noise, and we couldn't find a good diff. at the time. We went back to the 4:11s. On a trip back from Pharr, Texas, he lost overdrive. Upon inspection of the clutch plates, the splines were gone on the overdrive plates and very little left on the main clutch plates.I thought he was extremly lucky that it hadn't let him set out in the middle of nowhere, ( like Kansas?).HA We pulled the tranny and went back to the origional four speed as parts were unavailable to repair it at the time (80's): before internet. Worked fantastic; you could split the gears, great for hills, acceleration and top speed. Too bad someone doesn't make the parts again.I think the planetary looks like the vs2's, but has splines on the outside of the unit to engage the main clutch plates. The main clutch parts looks like the wet clutch on a 4905. Two big thin discs and a floater plate. Maybe some cobbling up of existing parts can be made to work with some engineering and modification. If you ever had a good one, you would never want to give it up.

Mel,

I'm sorry, but I can't tell you if they are the same gearset or not.

Michael,
If I needed an odd GM part I would contact Luke at US Coach or Garry Dean (919)383-4780. They are the two best sources for old GM bus parts and info that I'm aware of. Best of luck.
