I'm wanting to know on my 4106 the fast idle cylinder at the governor. When the fast idle is turn on does the little rod that comes out the end of it push on the throttle linkage or throttle lever to rise the rpms. I know when it's on my fuel pedal don't work. And if it didn't touch any of the linkage or throttle what would happen thanks

When fast idle is on, the little rod that comes out is the throttle stop. You can't drive the coach with the fast idle on that way.

so all it does is to stop the throttle from moving. How is the rpm's controled for the fast idle? or where can you make adjustments at?

Bob -

You need to get your hands on a DDA maintenance manual for the 8V71 engine before you start fooling around with the governor, fast idle, throttle, idle settings, etc. The governors are very sensitive, and if not adjusted according to "DA BOOK", can give you real serious headaches.

Check on eBay or some of the used book dealers, or order a brand new one from DDA, mine cost me $119 including CA sales tax. It's BIG: two 3" three-ring binders worth, binders are included.

He's referring to the cylinder on an earlier post he made - asking for help on the air throttle. Which I put a link to my air throttle photo. I don't think he has intended to get into the governor. So Don's answer was what he wanted I believe.
He was looking at my arrangement;

Yes Larry thats true but after looking I was wondering how it did work so all it does is to stop the throttle from moving. How is the rpm's controled for the fast idle? or where can you make adjustments at? No i'm not going in to it but wanted to know how it does Just wanted to know

Hi again Bob,
I had sent you a more descriptive e-mail as to how it works.
But anyway, the RPM is control by adjusting that small throttle stop so it restricts the travel of the throttle, when switch is on fast idle it will extend toward throttle mechanism, you can move it in or out to suite your RPM fast idle requirements and that will stop you from accelerating, reason for that is so you don't come up behind something and the fast idle drive you into it, so to drive turn fast idle off and your throttle control is back.

Hi Guys,
I don't know about anyone elses 4106 but on ours when you switch on the fast idle, the brakes also come on which prevents you from driving with fast idle on.
Thanks, Sam Sperbeck

That is all good advice Bob, I would recommend you NOT mess with the governor or fast idle speed without some serious book reading, and even then, I would not recommend trying without an experienced guy watching and helping. I have had to "bail out" a couple of guys that got in over their head there.

Thanks for all the in put No I DON'T WANT TO MESS WITH but my cable went bad and i'm going with the air throttle and was trying to find a place to mount the air slave cylinder and the fast idel cylinder was in the way if you look at larry's picture thats what i was going to do but the fast idel is there in the way so i'm looking in to try something else

"I don't know about anyone elses 4106 but on ours when you switch on the fast idle, the brakes also come on which prevents you from driving with fast idle on. "

My Sportscar of Coaches has the std setup where the emergency brake lever (Johnson bar) has an enabling micro switch, and of course the controll panel switch.

The fast idle is usefull for a minuet or two while airing up in the AM , after that its your engine your ideling to early replacement.

The new cable is abour $80 , and any install parts are avilable with a phone call.

Do you really wish to swop simplicity for complexity?

Huge parts count = higher maint & repair costs.

Ask NASA.

OK, I see the problem now. Larry has a non standard setup, probably an add on unit. On the factory setup, the two air plungers are side by side. The one on Larry's bus that is by the engine shutdown mechanism, is somebody's attempt to do it differently (quite effective I would suppose though)

Bob

I looked at the picture and I don't see why the fast idle clyinder is in the way of anything-- the fast idle clyinder is on the side of the governor where the buffer goes, not on top. When you activate the fast idle, the plunger on the small air clyinder comes out making the foot throttle inoperative. The fast idle speed is controlled my a plunger inside the fast idle clyinder.

Hi All,
Just for reference, here a pic of my 8v71 without air throttle.

bob
the valve your asking about is called a "skinner
" valve, it pushes a butterfly that puts the high idle on and at the same time locks the breaks so no matter what the coach can never be slid into a gear on a high idel.it also turns off the coach thru a relay when you throw the off engine switch. mine actually shut down the 8-71 several times, one cause of an electrical relay problem and the second was low voltage. we didnt know that could happen until we found that the alternator was toast and the voltage regulator fried at the same time.
if you disconect the high idel skinner valve you cant turn off the 8-71 by the remote kill switch by the drivers left control panal. you would have to pop the back engine door and throw the butterfly forward yourself. i am currently doing that now until my alternator is fixed in the next few weeks.

Yes Craig picture shows how mine is now. Thats what I said about moveing it like Larrys. But I know what it did but didn't know everything else it did. And as far as fixing the cable all the parts needed was alittle more then the air throttle
