When I took my floor out I found a radiator in front of the first baggage compatment. I was told this was for the coach heat.Since I dont plan on using the coach heat system can I fill this area with insulation? There are two dimmer switches on the floor I realize that one is for the headlights but what is the other one for?The entry door has a locking mechanism how do you activate it? Thanks in advance.

On our MCI 8 we are going to use that front heater area for our three 8Dhouse batteries. Since they are AGM batteries, getting to them for service is not much of an issue. On my bus there is a dimmer switch on the floor and another similar looking device that is actually a foot button to blow the horn.

The entry door lock is activated by a micro-switch on the door operating mechanism. The switch is inside the dash. The emergency override is the red handled lever under the dash.

I put an auxiliary 100 gallon fuel tank in the heater core/evaporator area.

If I leave the heater core in can I fill the area with insulation. Will this have any effect on my engine cooling?

nope... the engine is cooled by the 2 radiators on each side at the rear of the coach.... there will be another "core" and a set of squirrel cage blowers in the same bay as the heater core.... this is for the air conditioning.... if you have removed the comprssor from the engine, you can remove these evaporator cores also...the condensor core is located on the drivers side on a swing-out door... right behind the left front wheel.... i sold these as salvage...

I took the A/c unit out and left the heating unit for
heat going down the road, and I also made it in the summer I can direct the heat from this heating core out side and if my eng heat is rising I just turn on
the heater and I have a extra radiator.

Actually Jim, unless I miss my guess, I believe that Terry is refering to the coach heater core, the one in the middle of the coach. It is definitively CAPABLE of affecting the temp of the engine...and on a hot day, I suspect, dramatically so.

I personally would not stuff insulation around that unit, even if you aren't going to use it for coach heat, since nearly everyone has some concern about an over temp engine, I'd use it in the way that Bill
has configured (great idea Bill)!

PS Bill how did you get the hot air to dump overboard?

JimnH,

Terry might actually have the old manual lever on the dash that opens the door. From your description Jim, it sounds as if you are talking about the pneumatic door that MCI has on the later model buses.

The old manual lever only pulls the door shut and then goes over center to hold it in position. Other than that I don't know of any locks unless there is a cylinder lock on the door for a key.

Of course I could be totally wrong and just stuck my foot into the ol' pie hole.

Brian: On each side one in the battery comp and on the other side in the old condenser comp. I made a chute out of metal that extends into the fiberglass factory chute. this chute extends out next to the outside of the bus, I installed grills at this point. I have two different lengths slides. A long one which shuts off the heat into the coach and directs it out the chute to the outside, then in the winter I have a short chute and a end cap that I install and the heat goes where it always did. Works great, if you are standing out side when the blowers are on, hold on to you hat.

This coach is only going to make 1 trip. When I first started posting to this board I told everyone what iI was planning on doing with it.We bought 150 acres of land in northern Ontario and the coach is going to be our home.So I guess the question is will it make it from Iowa up there in May on just the radiators in the back.Al you are right I do have the handle on the dash but there is a mechanism about halfway down the door that looks like it moves and latches the door.It has a grease nipple on it too.

It ought to be enough for engine cooling Terry, but if you insulate that heater core area, be very careful not to damage the heater
core...

I know there is a gate valve for the heater cores under the engine bay access in the back of my coach, and on MC-9's, but I don't know if yours has one, and that only stops flow through
the heater core, unless there is another gate valve somewhere it doesn't isolate the heater core from the engine cooling system.

It sounds to me that Terry does have a pnuematic door lock system same as in my coach, and I have no idea how it operates...yet, but I haven't really studied the problem. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it isn't a minor problem, possibly the microswitch is bad or out of adjustment.

Terry,
I also have a 72 MC7, and still have the coach heating and cooling systems in place, so I'm not much help on the radiator core. I do plan to gut both units. As for the door lock, I have a red lever on the bottom of my dash that operates an air lock mechanizm on the door. It releases if you open the door using the mechanical arm, which I still have in use.
I bought one of the manuals for the MC7, and depending on your bus number, the diagrams change due to the constant design changes. If you email me your number and want some specific info, I'll scan the page and email it back to you.

Terry- Then you do have a microswitch near the handle shaft under the dash. Unless someone did away with it and only uses the manual overide lever. Not a good idea though. If you are parked overnight with the latch engaged and your air goes down, the latch will release. Then, when you leave the bus after starting it, to do a pretrip, etc., the latch will re-engage itself and you'll be on the outside looking in. Got to then go to the back of the bus, kill the engine and let some air out of someplace to release the latch. Don't ask how I know that!! :(
