Left orange for Orlando a week ago.2 hours out the fan hub ( which is made in two parts and tack welded together), came apart which allowed the fan, still connected to the hub to move forward and spin into the radiator. When I was getting my new harmonic balancer and hub, Stewart and Stevenson did suggest I also change out the fan hub, but It looked good to me. Well if it helps anyone else. It needs to be checked on a regular basic together with the crank shaft nut that holds everything together. John |

This is the third time in a couple of months I have heard of this happening on a 4104, once to a close friend whose bus I knew well! |

Don on the way back the replacement radiator ( from my parts bus /hub /and fan )started to leak from the bottom bracket, were it bolts to the bottom tank. I tried to tighten it up but semed to do more damage/ started to leak more. We pulled into a walmart outide of Tallahassie, spent the night, which alowed the system to cool. Added 4 bottles of stop leak and 10 gallons of water. The leak had stopped before I started it up. On start up ( 29 deg f cold for Florida ) I started to hear a metal on metal rattle noise. looked all over. It was the starter staying in, the switch was not rebounding and letting it out.It smoked real bad, I have a full kit so I will rebuild it. Anyway, I hope posting the problems we have had this week will help someone else watch for the pit falls. Now I am back I will mount a NEW fan hub /rod out and re-tank the radiator and rebuild the starter. John |

Sorry Alan, but the devil made me do it! At 10-11 thousand rpm it might be some accessory breaking the sound barrier!! |

Alan A friend in Chicargo had the same problem. It was as two dogs suggested the drive shaft. he took it off had it ballenced, now no problem. When you put yours back did you line the arrows or what ever it is that shows you how it goes back? it is ballanced to slide back only one way. John |

Driveshaft?? He did not say anything about when moving, only sitting racing the engine to those outlandish speeds, right? Which brings up a question, John did you feel, hear or see any unusual stuff prior to your fan departing the engine? |

Depends a lot on the gearing and tires Two Dogs. My bus was overgeared, and at 11,000 I would be just about Mach .9. Your mileage may vary depending on wind speed, driver habits and slower traffic. |

Opps sorry about the high RPM mistake how about we slow her down to 1,000 to 1100 my fault it does this vibration parked so I don't belive the drive shaft is bad I also timed it when reinstalling it (drive shaft) I still can't figure how J R's fan came apart my fan bolts on to hub & blades are rivited on fan? Maybe a different type Fan I'm trying to round up a different balancer right Sam :-) PacoXpress 4104 |

My fan did not come unbolted. The fan shroad that is metal were it attaches to the drive shaft then rubber then metal again the rubber and metal tack welds let loose. allowing the outside part of the hub to spin free of the inside and it worked its way with the fan forwad to the radiator. John |

I used to have a 4x4 pulling truck, and at some of the pulls they would have a altered semi class. At one particulal pull a Very Cool looking Gmc cracker box with an 8v92 made a full pull and put out more black smoke than I had ever seen. I went over to talk to the owner and he stated that the DD was ballanced and blue printed and had several "trick" parts and would turn 6000 rpm. would'nt you like to see everyones reaction when You pulled your bus into the staging lanes at the drag strip on saturday night Smoky, |

You can do some unorthodox things to a Detroit to make it spin very fast, several thousand RPM at that, but you shorten it's life quite a bit. A tractor pull is, how long? A couple hundred feet at most. Fuel economy is probably a few gallons per mile at such high revs. If the vibration disappears at higher RPMs (not just gets less pronounced) then it's probably the balancer. I ran a Ford FE big block without its balancer once and it did much the same thing, with a vibration around 1400 rpm that went away at around 2600. (Why did I do this? The balancer was part of the crankshaft front pulley, and I wanted to add an arc welder to the pickup truck and as the truck came stock without power steering or air conditioning, it only had one V belt groove. I thought I could get away without a balancer and just use a 3 groove pulley I had on hand - bad idea. The vibration was bad enough that I was concerned I was going to bust the crank or the block. Eventually found a balancer with the requisite V belt grooves in a junkyard.) |
