I have an older 8/71 with the canister filters and have been looking for the ones that you can adapt for the spin on fuel and oil filters So the question is are they ok or are there drawbacks to them like leaks and restrictions to the flow of oil.The Detroit counter guy says are not recomended for the older 6s & 8s but would not elaborate |

Phil-- I have a 6v71 with the canister filter and wanted to change to the spin on but was advised by a couple of people to stick with the canister. The elements are cheaper, larger and already in place. they are real easy to change, just make sure you remove the old rubber o ring gasket and install the new one each time. hope this helps--Steve--75 AM General |

Phil-- however--I did find a detroit in a bone yard with spin on fuel filters and converted those over. They are much easier to deal with when it comes to fuel spilling and leaking than the canister fuel filters. I did stick with the canister oil filter though Steve |

do not use a rubber gasket on the canister, use the paper gasket, the canister will cut through the rubber, talking from experience !!! what a mess !!! spin-ons on the fuel are better than the canister. I have a canister on the oil and also a bypass spin-on on the oil, about the same, canister has a drain spin-on does not ???? 6 for one, half a dozen for the other ??? |

The cannister oil filters can be a pain to get on, and you must change the paper gasket each time. The adapator for converting the cannister-type to a spin on work okay but you will find that you have to take the adaptor off once in a while to change the paper gasket that seals it (the same gasket the cannister uses!), so you don't gain much. The best thing to do is find a newer engine at a wrecking yard and buy the spin on housing and install it on your engine. Nimco would be a good place for one, along with the spin on fuel filter housings. |

On my coach which has a 8V from the mid 60's (I guess) the switch over to spin on lube filter was done with the blessing of DD , and a $75.00 adapter from DD.NAPA is similar & cheaper. Biggest advantage besides being less messy ,is the ability to pour the filter full of oil during the change. Takes less time to get oil pressure up all the bearings at restart .Can't hurt. My 1944 Grey Marine 6-71 has a bypass filter system, that uses the old canister style. The unusual thing is the oil after 50 hours looks like the oil in a car , not a diesel , in terms of color & blackness. Perhaps its oil changes at 50 hours ,or perhaps the Navy was correct in calling it a color filter. Anyhow compared to coach oil at the 6000 mile change its difference is amazing. FAST FRED |

Phil, I just added two screw on fuel filters to my 8V71. Makes a breeze to change and when the mechanic that put them on filled the filters I almost fell over at how easy it was. Go for it, makes it easier at that random change if needed at a far off truck stop. Interesting Fred about the oil filter. May need to do that. Eric |
