Go in a NAPA store and look with their rep and see what is available and then you can see who, what, and where it works. Saves a lot of time.

Brian, I also eventually found that link but I'm not sure which one is the "one" i need. The ECO-SM looks similar, but it's missing a small outlet...about 1 1/2"...hmmm!

I was thinking I would probably use the P527586. what is the small outlet for? Air compressor? I was thinking a separate filter or a tee off the hose to the turbo.

What does your post have to do with the subject?

Complaints are NOT technical bus talk either,
so 40% of your material is out of bounds by YOUR own estimation.

What is the benefit of doing away with the oil bath filter?, a minor gain in air flow that is soon lost as the filter becomes loaded and most of the time ignored by owners, I'd rather have the consistent miner restriction of the oil bath set up. Marvin don't you use a sundial? no winding required, Hey Goulash # thuppppppp!!!!

want a dry filter? try sand?
BTW You can C & P it,LOL

On our Saudi Bus there was lots in the filter at 1 time when it was shipped back, eh!

Jerry "Wix 42126" will fit in your regular housing and call Luke for the inside attaching pieces plus the bottom rubber dust cup. I have 3 on my 6V71.
You will need 4 with your 8V unless they have bee changed already. Thats why they are saying go to the one filter and housing, you will get more room and they run cleaner.

i think george is correct in his evaluation about keeping what already works.ive had one and didnt like cleaning it.but have collapsed an element filter and wished i had the old system. its all personal preference. speaking of preference i prefer following the guidelines at the beginning of this bus, bus, bus sight. questions and answers about bus, bus, bus. if i want comic relief i can watch leno or any other comic.its great to see a sense of humor about busses for busses and reading these posts over the years i believe that opinion is widely shared. i want to learn new things bus related and new ways to do things.i dont need to be schooled on sence of humor by some old guy from texas. by the way im an old guy and i smiled when i mentioned texas it sure is a big state when you have to drive through it.busses are for sanity thanks

The 18 wheelers have found this to sometimes be worth 1/2 MPG.

http://www.fleet-airfilters.com/Home.html

It does need cleaning but at 200,000 miles a year vs 4,000 the fuel savings are in the tens of thousands of dollars.

"I liked this site a lot better before it turned into a hijacking of every thread with "humor"."

AGREE ,

Well, I have to disagree to a degree about the humor.
I can certainly use some humor in these tough times. I like the humor of "The Three Stooges" etc.

But, I do find it aggravating when inserted into every thread. So I guess I fall somewhere in the middle. I do not visit the other sites any more where anything that's not strictly bus technical is deleted. This site is more like a small town diner or tavern where there are some strangers and a lot of regulars. It's a richer experience than just going to McDonalds.

High Flow filter.... translation_ allows fine particulates into your combustion chambers. and since there is an impromptu polling going on--- I like the humour. but I wish we had a room for just plain conversations with friends not yet met in person.

I get the distinct impression
that someone is holding a gun to the heads of 3-4 people here...
and FORCING THEM to read my posts...

I have some advice for them..
move to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA..!

Here we have the FREEDOM of speech
& we are free NOT to read everything that is printed on the page.

Over here you don't have to play the VICTIM all the time, you actually have a choice
to READ or NOT to read....

But I have to warn you,
American's have a distaste for people
whose main occupation in life is to complain.

I am not responsible for Latvia or anyone else's happiness or sadness here...
Their problems, deficiencies, inabilities & lack of education & sense of humor are THEIR PROBLEMS.

If you can't be happy HERE
I doubt you can be anywhere else as well and
even IF I stopped posting here
you'd still be a whiner....
so what's the point?

To sign on to this Forum
and then 7 days later start complaining about
people who have posted here for decades
is just a tad beyond reasonable adult behavior.

Be part of the community and make a contribution here
and IF you don't appreciate my humor
be a man and
DON'T READ WHAT I POST
you have that choice
or you can continue to piss & moan that you are the victim,
which ever you are more skilled at and
which ever you are most comfortable doing...in public.

Since this thread has been hijacked, I will throw my 6 cents in (inflation, you know).

Many of us have been around these boards for a lot of years and, quite frankly, the vast majority of questions have been asked and answered dozens of times. We are still willing to answer again to help those just getting started or who have just found us.

However, the camaraderie, button pushing, chain jerking, and joking around amongst friends is a large part of the appeal and reasons for being here.

I don't even own a bus any longer and have no reason to be here except to help as I can and to enjoy the company of friends.

If all you want is tech support, then perhaps this is not the place.

Len,
I might add
FREE TECH support from volunteers
who have no obligation to answer any question at all
but do so out of a sense of community and shared situations.

I get the impression that some who come here assume that this is a site staffed to solve problems for them 24/7
...and likely paid by the government, by the way they demand attention & solutions!

The REAL PROBLEM is
peoples EXPECTATIONS OF OTHERS
the problem with this is ...
when you EXPECT others to live up to standards YOU set for THEM,
based on YOUR DESIRES & NEEDS.....
all you are doing is setting yourself up for a continuous string of failures
because NO ONE will or can ever meet YOUR EXPECTATIONS, including yourself!

The Whining can go on forever for all I care,
I know who they are
and I posses the capacity to deal properly with them
by ignoring their presumptions or whatever it is that they think
they are accomplishing or contributing here.

Relationships that are healthy are formed thru conversation in 2 directions that engage both parties,
not expectations, demands or whining or sniveling or other juvenile devices of displeasure.

As for Leno or Comedy Central..... they are all yours & you can HAVE them
if I was a Sheep I'd likely be impressed by the lowest common denominators of mass-entertainment for those who like to be spoon fed.
Frankly, TV, in my book, is for those with little initiative & lots of time to vegetate or those who enjoy being sold consumer crap.
(I think some here could better use the time wasted watching TV or carping on forums to re-familiarize themselves with Grammar, Spelling & sentence construction)

I own a bus because it allows me to EXPAND my horizons
and not
to limit my perspective on the world & people outside my windshield.

AND..
for the record
THIS SITE belongs to IAN,
He runs it in a fashion that suits him & his goals,
might I suggest that anyone here who has a problem with this Forum
do the proper thing by taking your problems with HIS FORUM
to HIM...
he is a smart & talented individual and it's likely that he can guide those with problems to either a solution
or
to all of the BETTER bus sites on the Internet, as if there are any.
and FWIW..
I am not on any of those sites to impact what I am sure is your perfect life...

You either don't have the original stock ones or they re an odd size someone put in. Mine are 1 inch lower than the housing but are covered when you put the bottom cup on.

Maybe measure yours and find one that fits or call Luke he can tell you what the number old be for yours and maybe tell you where to get them. HTH

I agree that better flow than a standard paper element usually means less filtration. Remember where your air intake is, at the back of the bus.

If you have a truck wrecking yard near they will have a mountain of air cleaner cans to scope out.

I too am tired of wading through a bunch of posts trying to follow a thread. Now it seems if someone thinks there is little humor or use to a post the result is the attack of the penguin. :-)

In my findings,The oil Bath filters are the best because they filter a lot mor than dry ones and I will continue to get dirty and use my oil bath filters. Just my 5 Cents

I see you have a lower price than Len does...
is it the local inflation rate or are you just cheaper...?

and are you looking for secret messages hidden in the white spaces...?

I wonder if using a lighter weight oil like 0w5 in the oil bath if that would decrease the restriction inherent to the design. I will pay 10¢ for an answer. Ian please clean your board out there are unwanted critters running around.

George, lower viscosity oil mean lighter oil, so the engine could draw it higher into the filter.
The restriction of the original spec'ed oil is a good thing. If you see smoke from the exhaust while cruising, the intake is restricted.

Best practice is to put an appropriate "filter minder" in line after the air cleaner. that will let you know that the filter is doing it's job.

OTH, if you see smoke from a normally clean running engine, you will soon see higher engine temps.

Hey Jerry.

I parted a 77 KW to get the 8V71 TA a couple years ago. KW used 2 square Farr air cleaners with a crossover pipe on this engine that are specific to the DD. They are still hanging on the truck. This gives you an idea of what was top of the line during the day of the 2 stroke.

If you have room this is the best set up I have used, I never could get a 71 to run good on one air cleaner, but they sure run great on 2.

Any truck bone yard can fix you up if you look around. I really like the new Farr Eco too, but it needs to be sized to a 2 strokes airflow for best results. (Any Eco will flow more than your oil bath I think).

Hey I know, how about 2 Eco's on a Y pipe?

I've always been surprised more busnuts aren't running a pair of air filters and a Y pipe.

happy coaching!

What about getting the intake up into some cool air also?

When my 8-71TA was done, a GM part# 15520287 housing with element #15515589 was installed on the right side with the 7in. cold air intake faceing the outside. When you cross reference the element I think it is the same as used on big R's GM/Volvo S-60 and N-14., but their cold air intake is only 5 or 6in.

Everyone, what I finally did was talk to Luke @ US Coach and he sold me a MCI-9 Dry Air filter system with a new element...bolts directly in place of my old system. Hopefully I'll see some performance improvements.

On friday I received the dry air filter setup from US Coach. I quickly noticed that the cannister diameter is smaller, but overall it looked like the old oil bath cannister. Luke included the original rubber tubing to the manifold and 2 brackets...at first I wasn't sure why. I later found out that because the replacement cannister was a smaller diameter than the original none of the original clamps hoses, etc. were going to work and so thankfully everything needed was included with the new setup. However, this didn't mean it was an easy "bolton"...I had to drill a couple of new holes for the brackets and play around with the new intake tubing to get everything to line up...my arms were pretty tired after this. A test drive is set for this week...results are soon to follow.

Well I took a short drive to see if I would gain some improvement in performance and/or mileage and while I did notice a performance improvement I did not prepare to check for mileage improvement...next time though.
